IT WAS A LOSS THAT REVERBERATED THROUGHOUT THE SEACOAST, WHERE THE SHIP WAS BUILT AT THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD AND LEFT FROM PORTSMOUTH HARBOR ON ITS FINAL JOURNEY, BUT ALSO ALL OF AMERICA, AND THE DIGNITARIES, WHO SPOKE RECOGNIZED THAT THE SACRIFICES WERE NOT IN VAIN. A memorial service was held Saturday for the 129 sailors lost after the USS Thresher sank off the coast of Massachusetts 60 years ago on April 10, 1963, in the deadliest submarine disaster in the U.S.The service happened at Traip Academy in Kittery, Maine, and featured speeches from Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire along with family members of the victims and musical selections.The USS Thresher was built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and sailed from Portsmouth harbor on its final journey. It sank in 8,500 feet of water 220 miles off Cape Cod, where it remains to this day.Its sinking led to the implementation of a program called SUBSAFE, an extensive series of design modifications, training and other improvements for submarines. No SUBSAFE-certified American submarine has sunk since the sinking of the Thresher.Those who spoke at the service say that the sacrifice of the 129 men on the ship will never be forgotten.“Everyone on board that submarine that day knew the risks and dangers associated with defending our nation," Shaheen said. "Their legacy of service and devotion to duty is an inspiration to all of us.”
