SCLC will walk the streets to try to combat gun violence

BREAKING WEATHER UPDATE. AS THE COMMUNITY PROCESS PROCESSES THE TRAGIC MASS SHOOTING IN FIVE POINTS SOUTH OVER THE WEEKEND, THE SCLC SAYS THEY’RE TAKING ACTION. WVTM 13 LISA CRANE SPOKE TO LEADERS TODAY ABOUT THEIR PLAN. LISA, WHAT DID YOU LEARN? WELL, THEY SAY IT IS TIME FOR FAITH LEADERS TO WALK THE WALK AND NOT JUST THOSE IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, BUT THEY SAY ALL CHURCHES REALLY NEED TO STEP UP BECAUSE THIS VIOLENCE AFFECTS EVERYONE. AS HORRIFIC AS THE SCENE WAS ON SATURDAY NIGHT OUTSIDE HUSKE LOUNGE, IT WAS NOT NEW. IT WAS THE THIRD MASS SHOOTING THAT CLAIMED FOUR LIVES THIS YEAR IN THE METRO AREA. SOME HAVE CALLED THE RASH OF DEADLY SHOOTINGS A CULTURAL PROBLEM. IT IS A CULTURAL PROBLEM BECAUSE MY BIGGEST FEAR IS FEARING A BLACK MAN THAT LOOKS LIKE ME, AND I SHOULD NOT FEAR THAT, BECAUSE AT ONE POINT IN TIME, AS DOCTOR KING, DREAM WAS, WE STOOD HERE UNITED. BUT WE’RE MORE DIVIDED AGAINST EACH OTHER THAN ANYBODY ELSE AGAINST US IN AMERICA. THE SCLC, ALONG WITH SEVERAL FAITH AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, SPOKE OUT ABOUT THE VIOLENCE. THEY SAY THEY HAVE A PLAN TO TURN THE TIDE BY CONCENTRATING ON THE 12 MOST VIOLENT ZIP CODES IN THE MAGIC CITY. WE’RE GOING TO TAKE THESE BLOCKS ONE BLOCK AT A TIME, AND EVERY CHURCH REPRESENTS A BLOCK OF SAFETY. EVERY BUSINESS REPRESENTS A BLOCK OF SAFETY. WE WANT TO DECLARE THAT RIGHT NOW THAT PEOPLE CAN PROTECT THAT BLOCK AND SPREAD IT OUT TO THE COMMUNITY, AND WE CAN OVERCOME THIS. THEY SAY GETTING OUT OF THE CHURCHES AND INTO THE COMMUNITY IS THE KEY. AND THEY’RE CALLING ON ALL CITY LEADERS TO JOIN THEM. ALL WE’RE ASKING RIGHT NOW IS FOR SUPPORT FROM OUR CITY. SUPPORT FROM CLERGY AND SUPPORT FROM THE FAMILY. AND I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO STOP THIS VIOLENCE. THAT’S GOING ON IN OUR CITY. NOW, A VIGIL FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE SHOOTING JUST ABOUT TO START HERE IN FIVE POINTS OUT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HUSH LOUNGE. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE MUCH MORE ON THAT FOR YOU. COMING U

SCLC will walk the streets to try to combat gun violence

As the community processes the tragic mass shooting in Five Points South over the weekend, the SCLC says they're taking action. They say it's time for faith leaders to walk the walk and not just those in the black community, but they'd like to see all churches step up because they say this violence affects everyone. As horrific as the scene was on outside Hush Lounge, it was not new. It was the third quadruple murder in Birmingham this year. Some have called the rash of deadly shootings a cultural problem. Birmingham resident Brandon Bowers said, “It is a culture problem because my biggest fear is fearing a black man that looks like me. And I should not fear that, because at one point in time, as Dr. King dreamed was, we stood here united. But we are more divided against each other than anybody else against us in America.”The SCLC along with several faith and community leaders spoke out about the violence. They said they have a plan to turn the tide by concentrating on the 12 most violent zip codes in the Magic City. Pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Darryl Cunningham, Sr. said, “We're going to take these blocks one block at a time. And every church represents a block of safety. Every business represents a block safe. I'm going to claim that right now that people can protect that block and spread it on out to the community. And we can overcome this.” They said getting out of the churches and into the community is the key and they're calling on all city leaders to join them. Pastor of Olivet Monumental Baptist Church, Harold W. Bass said, “All we're asking right now is for support from our city, support from clergy, and support from the family and I believe that we'll be able to stop this violence that's going on in our city.”
