Students make Christmas cards for residents at senior living community

WHERE FOR RESIDENTS LIKE RON, CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY BY WAY OF HANDWRITTEN CARDS FROM SOUTH FLORIDA STUDENTS. THEY’RE OVERWHELMED. ONE OF THE RESIDENTS WAS JUST SINGING YANKEE DOODLE. IT JUST UNLOCKED SO MUCH FUN FOR THEM. THE CARDS DELIVERED ALONG WITH A HEAPING DOSE OF CHRISTMAS CHEER. PACKING SHELVES AND MAKING CARDS AND EATING COOKIES, SINGING SONGS. YEP, WE’D LOVE TO HAVE YOU COME AND VISIT BY ELVES. HELLO! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! OTHERWISE KNOWN AS PEOPLE FROM THE GROUP SENIOR HELPERS. SOMETIMES THE RESIDENTS CAN’T UNLOCK THAT MEMORY UNTIL IT’S PRESENTED IN FRONT OF THEM. AND A LOT OF TIMES, THEIR FAMILIES CAN’T ALWAYS BE HERE WITH THEM. SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO US THAT THEY GET TO STILL HOLD THOSE MEMORIES, WHETHER THEY’RE FAMILIES HERE OR NOT. FROM BRODY. IT’S SO SWEET. IN PALM BEA

Students make Christmas cards for residents at senior living community

Senior Helpers collected handwritten cards from students across south Florida to pass out at a senior living community in Palm Beach Gardens."They’re overwhelmed," Sara Simes, the marketing and sales director at Discovery Village, said. "One of the residents was just singing Yankee Doodle. It just unlocks so much fun for them."Staff from Senior Helpers in West Palm Beach dressed up as elves and went door-to-door to bring residents holiday cards, something Simes says can help residents feel less lonely if their families won't be able to visit this year.The cards, Christmas carols and crafts can also help those living with memory loss unlock some of their favorite memories. "It brings an added layer of joy to them, and it brings back memories that the team here can’t give to them alone," Simes said.

Senior Helpers collected handwritten cards from students across south Florida to pass out at a senior living community in Palm Beach Gardens.
