Sunny skies and chilly temperatures ahead for Alabama

COLD MORNINGS AHEADA north wind will continue to bring cooler air to Alabama through the week. Morning and afternoon temperatures will hold below average through Friday. It may be a good idea to dig out those heavier jackets from the back of your closet!You'll really notice the cooler air Tuesday morning, with widespread 40s to start the day. Even the afternoon hours will be cooler, with many communities struggling to reach 70 degrees. It will be breezy, too, with wind speeds ranging from 10-20 mph. This will make it feel even cooler than what the thermometer shows at times. At least the sunshine will feel really nice!FIRST FROST OF THE SEASON By midweek, an upper-level trough moves across the eastern half of the nation, causing winds to shift northward both at the surface and aloft. This sends a stronger shot of cooler and drier air into Alabama for Wednesday and Thursday. By Wednesday and Thursday mornings, lows could plummet to the mid and upper 30s across the north to low 40s further south. If winds die down, that could mean some spots get their first frost of the season. Our usual first frost of the season occurs around or after Oct. 25 for most of North and Central Alabama. NO RAIN THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTHDrier air is here to stay. Most of central Alabama hasn’t received rain in over two weeks, and it looks like it could be at least another two weeks before rain returns. This is not uncommon, October is typically our driest month here in Alabama.The pleasant weather lasts into the weekend, with a slight warm-up through Sunday. UAB will have a breezy, warm and muggy kickoff, but the other games look perfect for fall football. EYE ON THE TROPICSThe latest tropical development on the National Hurricane Center's radar is Invest 94-L. While it's currently in an environment not conducive to formation, there's a medium chance it could become a tropical depression or storm within the next week once it moves to a more favorable region. Most global models bring it close to the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas toward early next week. I know there's a lot of tropical anxiety after five named storms made landfall along the Gulf Coast (Beryl, Debby, Francine, Helene, and Milton) this season.
