A LOT TO GET TO THIS HALF HOUR. BUT FIRST, WE WANT TO CHECK BACK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST ADRIAN CASTELLANO ADRIAN. A LOT OF FOLKS LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FORECAST. YEAH, YOU KNOW, WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS EARLIER. IT’S A LITTLE HAZY OUT THERE TO BEGIN IN THIS MORNING. AND THAT’S BECAUSE OF THESE FIRES THAT ARE ONGOING. WESTERN CANADA, WILDFIRES, JUST MASSIVE ONES HERE IN ALBERTA. AND THAT UPPER LEVEL WIND FLOW IS PULLING THAT SMOKE DOWN TO THE SOUTH AND EAST. SO NO MAJOR IMPACTS HERE IN CENTRAL ALABAMA. BUT IF YOU LOOK OUTSIDE, YOU NOTICE IT’S JUST A LITTLE HAZIER THAN NORMAL. THAT’S LIKELY THE REASON. NOW, AGAIN, NO IMPAC
Canada wildfires bring hazy skies to Alabama
Have you noticed a bit of a grey haze to the sky today? Skies were in fact cloud-free across much of central Alabama this morning. What you were seeing was haze, likely from wildfires ongoing well to our northwest.According to NASA and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, nearly two dozen fires rage of at least 10,000 acres across the Canadian province of Alberta. Many more are also blazing across other provinces in Canada. An unusual spring combination of very dry and extremely warm weather has contributed to the outbreak of fires.Last week, much of the smoke spilling out of Canada, remained to our north. However, a change in the upper level winds has caused some of the smoke to move across Alabama. The smoke is suspended very high in the atmosphere. Air quality is in the moderate category today, but this is likely not attributed to the smoke. As winds shift, smoke should disperse across Alabama over the coming days.CLICK TO SEE THE 7-DAY FORECAST—STAY WEATHER AWAREGet the free WVTM 13 app and turn on the alerts for the latest weather updates. For the latest Birmingham weather information and central Alabama's certified most accurate forecast, watch WVTM 13 News.Current Weather ConditionsHourly Forecast | 10-Day ForecastInteractive RadarBirmingham SkycamsLive Doppler RadarSign Up For Email Weather AlertsDownload the WVTM 13 AppDon't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
