If you’ve scrolled through social media lately, you’ve probably noticed a new trend—the “lazy girl job.” This new trend comes from TikTok—what seems to be the source of all the trends in 2023—and it’s gaining major traction.

Here’s the good, the bad and the Birmingham on the “lazy girl job.”

The cons of the lazy girl job trend

First, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page. What is a “lazy girl job”? It depends on what TikToker you ask, but there are some common threads. Jobs that are low-stress, remote and still pay well can usually be classified as “lazy girl jobs.”

In essence, it’s a revolt of sorts against “hustle culture” originally popularized by Gabrielle Judge.

For example, data entry clerks—which, according to Google Trends, is the most trending job in associated with “lazy girl job” searches.

Seems pretty harmless, right? If you ask Business Insider, no. The trend has potentially harmful side effects, including low motivation to progress in one’s career. As more and more social media users have been bragging on their easygoing jobs, there is worry that low productivity is becoming normalized or even worse—glorified.

In addition, employers are catching on to the trend and may start to crack down on “lazy girl jobs” throughout their organizations—which could mean layoffs.

But that’s not the end of the story.

But the trend isn’t all bad, as some have argued. In fact, multitudes of young people have taken to social media to defend their “lazy girl job” and justify the name—which seems negative on the surface.

Here are some reasons why the trend might not be so bad:

• The trend encourages a work-life balance.
• Lazy girl jobs ensure that one can cover cost of living.
• You can do most lazy girl jobs anywhere.
• Childcare becomes much less of a concern.
