The 25th college football season of the 21st century ended on Monday night when Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 34-23 in the CFP national championship game. SEC Football by the Numbers’ review of the best of the conference’s past quarter-century started with the league’s leaders in passing yards on Wednesday, moved to the players with the most rushing yards on Thursday, showed with the players with the most receiving yards on Friday and continues with the composite records of the SEC members:
For its 2020 season, the SEC adopted a completely conference format for its regular season to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. Each league member was supposed to play a 10-game slate of SEC-only opponents.
Despite the precautions, the Vanderbilt-Georgia game scheduled for Dec. 19, 2020, never kicked off. The contest was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols when the Commodores fell below the conference’s minimum roster requirements.
It could be said that game is the difference between Alabama and Georgia in the 21st century. Over the past 25 seasons, the Crimson Tide has compiled a 151-51 against SEC opponents in regular-season play. The Bulldogs have a 150-51 conference mark during that span.
Alabama also has a slightly better overall record during the 21st century than Georgia. The Crimson Tide has gone 261-73 in all games over the past 25 seasons while the Bulldogs own a 259-74 record.
During the 67 seasons of SEC football in the 20th century, Alabama wasn’t as closely matched by a conference rival. From 1933 through 1999, the Crimson Tide compiled a 537-175-27 record. Tennessee was the only other SEC team to top 500 victories in that period with a 508-196-29 record.
The 21st century hasn’t been as tightly contested by another measurement – championships. Over the past 25 years, Alabama has won six national championships. The SEC has eight more this century – three by LSU, two apiece by Florida and Georgia and one by Auburn.
Five programs have won all 25 SEC Championship games since 2000, with Alabama winning nine, Georgia and LSU capturing five apiece and Auburn and Florida taking three each.

- The SEC’s top 25 rushers of the past 25 years: Still chasing Herschel Walker
- The SEC’s top 25 passers of the past 25 years: A Bulldog at No. 1
(The composite standings presented here are based on on-the-field results and include only the records as SEC members. Missouri and Texas A&M joined the conference in 2012, and Oklahoma and Texas joined the league in 2024.)
