Tuscaloosa City Schools will spend the summer working to fill 60 teaching positions before students return in August.It's no easy task for the district, especially with surrounding districts recruiting new teachers as well. That means finding ways to standout."We're paying student interns in the teaching field $1,200 a month and they can do their student internship with us and in turn, they would promise to teach at least a year with us," TCS executive director of HR and Operations, Dr. Deron Cameron, says. The district will allow up to 20 people to take advantage of it when school returns in August. It's more of a long-term approach to solving the ongoing teacher shortage. "We've got our TCS ambassadors, which are our TCS teachers within our school system, and they go out and recruit for us as well," Cameron explains. "And the candidates like talking to the teachers."As many as 20 bus drivers are needed in Tuscaloosa City Schools. Drivers are eligible for a $2,000 signing bonus. Starting pay is $23 an hour."If you don't have a CDL and want to become a bus driver, then we'll pay for their commercial driver's license," Cameron points out.
