Unity in the community: Meet the people that uplifted Central Alabama in 2024
OR FOUND YOURSELF SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR, YOU LIKELY KNOW IT IS NOT THE MOST RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP. YEAH, THIS IS A REALITY FOR HUNDREDS OF KIDS IN OUR OWN CITY WHO DON’T HAVE A BED TO SLEEP IN. TONIGHT’S WVTM 13 PROJECT COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS A SMALL GROUP MAKING A BIG IMPACT, WORKING TIRELESSLY TO BUILD DREAMS. WAS ONCE UPON. A TIME. WE’RE CHANGING DREAMS. ONE BED AT A TIME. IN A PLACE WHERE DREAMS. ARE CRAFTED FROM MATERIAL AND LOVE. THERE LIVED THE MONTGOMERY FAMILY, WHOSE LIVES WERE TOUCHED BY THE MAGIC OF A MISSION. THE MISSION IS IS SIMPLE. IT’S NO KID SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUR TOWN. CHECK OUT YOUR NEW BEDS. WHOA! SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE. THE KIDS ARE USUALLY OVER THE MOON EXCITED ABOUT IT. WHAT DO YOU THINK? IT’S GOOD FOR? 20 YEAR OLD, 17 YEAR OLD? 14. 12. NINE, FOUR AND NINE MONTHS. YOU ARE UNBELIEVABLE. I AM AT THE HELM OF THE BIRMINGHAM EAST CHAPTER. CHRIS DURAN, A KIND HEARTED CARPENTER. I STARTED IT JUST AS SOMETHING TO, YOU KNOW, HELP FIND A PURPOSE FOR ME AND A WHOLE TEAM OF SUPPORT WHO BELIEVES THAT EVERY CHILD DESERVES A COZY BED TO CALL THEIR OWN. THE CRAZY PART OF IT IS, IS JUST NOT KNOWING HOW MANY KIDS TRULY WERE ACTUALLY OUT THERE WHO DIDN’T HAVE A BED OF THEIR OWN TO SLEEP IN. MY PHOTOGRAPHER, ANDREW AND I CAME ALONG TO DELIVER BEDS TO THESE SWEET KIDDOS. ALL OF THESE ARE SPOKEN FOR. WE HAVE, I THINK, OVER 400 KIDS ON OUR WAITING LIST. THEY’RE SLEEPING. THEY’RE ON THE FLOOR, A BLOW, A MATTRESS, A PALLET OF CLOTHES, SLEEPING WITH MOM, COUCH, YOU NAME IT. OTHER. THAN A BED OF THEIR OWN. SO THIS IS WHAT WE CALL HOME. WE STOPPED BY STORAGE TO GATHER THE PIECES THAT WERE CREATED ON BUILD DAY, THEN DROVE TO THE HOME, CARRIED IN SUPPLIES AND SET UP, DRILLED AND HAMMERED THEM INTO PLACE, LAID DOWN THE FRAMES, PLOP DOWN THE MATTRESSES AND MADE THE BEDS, THE LITTLE ONES EXCITED TO HELP TOO, I’M SURE. UM. YOU’RE REALLY PROUD TO. THEY WANTED TO COME HELP OUT. THAT’S THAT’S THERE’S A LOT ABOUT YOU AND YOU AS A MOM. LISTEN, YOU ARE SO KIND. BUT REALLY, THEY HELP ME TO GROW, YOU KNOW? AND SO THAT’S JUST THEM. THEY’RE ALWAYS HELPING OUT. AND IT JUST MAKES MY JOB AS A. MOM EASIER. SO I’M JUST TRULY THANKFUL THAT GOD SENT THEM TO ME TO BE THEIR MOM. THE GIFTS MEAN THE WORLD TO THE MONTGOMERY’S FEEL GOOD. IT MEANS THAT MY CHILDREN, YOU KNOW, THEY’RE CALM, THEY’RE RELAXED, THEY’RE FOCUSED AT SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY HAD A REALLY GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP AND WITH EACH STURDY BED DELIVERED, THE GROUP GRANTING CHILDREN A TICKET TO A WORLD WHERE DREAMS ARE NOT JUST FOR THE LUCKY FEW, BUT FOR ALL WHO NEED A LITTLE EXTRA MAGIC TO SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE. SO. IT’S A NONSTOP NO KIDS DON’T SLEEP ON THE FLOOR MISSION. SO MANY VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS FROM MATERIALS TO THE BEDDING TO THE BUILDING, DELIVERING GOING THROUGH THE APPLICATIONS COME TOGETHER TO JUST MAKE THIS ALL POSSIBLE. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT DURING THE COMMERCIAL BREAK. AND YOU WERE SAYING THEY WERE LOOKING FOR SOME MORE WAREHOUSE SPACE, POSSIBLY. YEAH, THEY’RE LOOKING FOR A PLACE THAT THEY CAN CALL HOME. SO A PLACE THAT THEY CAN STORE THE WOOD AND THE MATERIALS, A PLACE TO HOST THOSE BUILD DAYS. SO IF YOU KNOW ANYBODY THAT COULD HELP OUT A WAREHOUSE TYPE
