POLICE SAY IT HAPPENED AROUND 230 THIS MORNING NEAR FIFTH AVENUE AND NINTH STREET IN THE SMITHFIELD COMMUNITY. WVTM13’S ERIN LEWELLEN JOINS US LIVE FROM OUTSIDE UAB HOSPITAL THIS AFTERNOON AFTER TALKING TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS ABOUT THESE SENSELESS MURDERS. YEAH, AND SHERRY, I TALKED TO A COUPLE OF PEOPLE TODAY WHO SAY THAT THEY ARE TIRED OF SENSELESS VIOLENCE IMPACTING THEIR COMMUNITY. NOW, ONE MAN CALLS THIS A SENSELESS TRAGEDY AND HE SAYS THAT IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE IF PEOPLE DON’T CONTINUE TO RESPECT HUMAN LIFE. NOW, LET’S GET YOU TO SOME INFORMATION THAT WE JUST LEARNED ABOUT THIS SHOOTING. NOW, WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT IT STARTED WITH SHOTS FIRED AT ARIA LOUNGE. FIVE PEOPLE WERE SHOT. TWO OF THEM WERE WOMEN. NOW, WE DO KNOW THAT THE IDS ON THOSE PEOPLE WERE MARKESHIA ATKINS, WHO WAS 24, AND CERVERA WILLIS, WHO WAS 33. BOTH WOMEN DIED AT UAB HOSPITAL. THEN A SEPARATE SHOOTING NEAR THE HOSPITAL. SHOTS FIRED DURING A DRIVE BY IN BIRMINGHAM. POLICE BELIEVE IT IS CONNECTED TO THE SHOOTING AT THE NIGHTCLUB. NO ONE WAS HURT IN THAT SHOOTING AND UAB POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING. ONE MAN I TALKED TO SAYS SENSELESS VIOLENCE IN BIRMINGHAM HAS TO STOP AND HE SAYS IT STARTS WITH SIMPLE CONFLICT RESOLUTION. THEY HAVE TO LEARN TO TO RESOLVE CONFLICT. Victims of deadly Birmingham club shooting fired at a second time outside UAB Hospital while seeking treatment
Two people are dead and three others are injured after a shooting at a Birmingham club Monday morning. They were shot at again as they tried to get treatment at UAB Hospital.It happened at 2:37 a.m. Monday at Aria Lounge and Restaurant on 5th Avenue North in the Smithfield area.Stay up-to-date: The latest headlines and weather from WVTM 13 When the victims arrived at UAB Hospital by a private vehicle, they were shot at again, according to the Birmingham Police Department. The UAB Hospital Emergency Room and an unoccupied UAB police vehicle were shot. The hospital was placed on lockdown.Two women, ages 24 and 33, died at UAB Hospital and "early indications are those who were shot were most likely innocent victims," according to police.Two other women and a man were also shot, police said. Family members have been waiting outside the hospital all morning long for information about their loved ones. Our city and its leadership will continue to work hard every day to hold those accountable for senseless acts of violence such as this morning’s incident. It is imperative for everyone to work together to prevent and eliminate future acts of violence.
