President Jimmy Carter surprised a Pennsylvania family of three in 1979 with a visit to their Carnegie home.

Charles Street in Carnegie was almost back to its original quiet residential identity this morning, though *** few residents gathered to reassure each other that, yes, the president really had paid them *** visit last night. The mini summit took place here at 7:23 Charles, the home of Bill and Betty Fisher and their 10 month old daughter Allison. The Fishers aren't sure why they were picked, describing themselves as non-political. As *** matter of fact, neither voted for President Carter. 5 other couples joined the Fishers on their patio for *** freewheeling discussion with the Carters, the president asking for *** frank appraisal of his administration and getting it. Probably the the toughest thing that. Uh, he was confronted with last night was, uh, his image as the president. And uh one of the couples that were here. said that they would like to see him be *** more aggressive president. Uh, carry maybe the, the Harry Truman sort of image, uh, *** rabble ri or somebody that would go and head to head with Congress and, uh, really get the country stirred up. Yesterday, this was just an ordinary lawn chair, but today it's the chair that the President of the United States sat in. The glass he drank his lemonade from has been carefully put away. I still don't think I really Comprehend that this really all happened to us. It's so hard to believe that that, you know, President and Mrs. Carter were actually here in our backyard. Uh, both President Carter and Mrs. Carter held Allison, and we had our pictures taken with her, so I'm sure when she's older and can go to school for show and tell, she'll really have something to show and tell. The Fishers described the meeting as an open and frank discussion with the president with really nothing held back. In fact, when the president invited all 5 couples to visit him in Washington, DC, one of the men replied, We'd love to come, Mr. President, if only we can find the gasoline.
