A person died Monday night in a house fire in north Birmingham, fire officials said.

A person died Monday night in a house fire in north Birmingham that police have deemed suspicious.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel received a call of a fire in the 2400 block of 40th Avenue North around 7:07 p.m. Monday, said BFRS Capt. Orlando Reynolds.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire upon arrival.

When firefighters made entry into the one-story home, they encountered the victim, who was pronounced dead, Reynolds said.

The victim has not yet been identified.

Firefighters got the blaze under control in about an hour.

Birmingham police were also on the scene of the fire.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said there was “suspicious activity” in connection with the blaze.
