IT’S RECOMMENDED TO GET VACCINATED FOR HPV BETWEEN THE AGES OF 11 AND 12, BUT THE VACCINE CAN BE ADMINISTERED AS YOUNG AS NINE AND IS TYPICALLY GIVEN THROUGH THE AGE OF 26. HOWEVER, THE FDA HAS APPROVED IT FOR THOSE THAT ARE UP TO 45 YEARS OLD. WHILE HPV IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF CERVICAL CANCER IN WOMEN, IT CAN ALSO HAVE IMPACTS ON MEN. HPV CAN CAUSE AN ASYMPTOMATIC INFECTION AND CAN CAN AFFECT ONE PERSON TO THE OTHER. The Alabama Department of Public Health reports that there are 14,000 new HPV cases annually and 4,000 women die from the disease each year.The CDC recommends getting vaccinated at 11-12 years old, but the vaccine can be administered to children as young as nine."It's best given very early in life before much exposure has taken place. And that's the best way to do it. That's why it's recommended, for those that are younger," said Dr. Wes Stubblefield, a medical officer with The Alabama Department of Public Health.The vaccine is typically administered through 26 years of age, but the FDA has approved its use for people up to 45.HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women, but it can also have impacts on men."HPV can cause an asymptomatic infection and can affect one person to the other. Men can also have certain types of cancers that are in the genital region. But more commonly, the one we see most commonly with men is, what we call oropharyngeal or, mouth and throat," said Stubblefield. According to the CDC, the vaccine can prevent up to 90% of cancers caused by HPV.
