A baby horse in Woodstock, Virginia, named Gia — whose mom died just after she was born — is getting the TLC she needs thanks to a foster momma horse.
When Gia's mom passed away, her owner, Paula Hursey, harnessed the power of social media, making a post asking for help to make sure the foal's needs were met.
"Mom didn't make it she had a twisted colon and the prognosis wasn't good no matter what we did," Hursey told WHSV.
Tracy Kiefer, who owns a horse named Beauty, answered the call to ensure Gia had a chance to know a mare's love.
Kiefer and Hursey had never met, but Kiefer didn't hesitate to help out.
"She goes 'What do you want for her?' And, I said 'Just take her and take care of her. You know you've been through enough you know what it would be like if something happened to your own kids, so just take care of her,'" Kiefer said of her initial conversation with Hursey.
Beauty, who has raised foals of her own, immediately tapped into her motherly instincts.
"Beauty is here to teach our little baby Gia to be a horse," Hursey said of the foster mom horse. "She needs the very important horse manners that we can't teach her."
Hursey is overwhelmed by the kindness of Kiefer — and Beauty.
"For somebody else to take off property having never even met us we thought that was just mind-blowing we were just ... we couldn't believe it," Hursey told WHSV.
Kiefer is just happy that Beauty seems to like the role of the doting mother.
"I just wanted Beauty to be happy whether it would be taking care of another baby or standing in the field and being down there watching her with the baby I knew she was happy," Kiefer said.
Beauty is expected to stay with Gia until she is about 6 months old, but Beauty's owners say they hope she can be a foster mom to other foals.
