A Birmingham carjacking victim is fighting for his life at UAB Hospital after fatally shooting a suspect Wednesday night at an apartment complex, police said.

Meanwhile, officers located the victim’s car and set up a perimeter where they believe additional suspects may be located.

East Precinct officers were called to the 700 block of Springville Road just before 8 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a person shot at the Springville Landing apartments, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Officers found an unresponsive man at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound, Fitzgerald said.

As a second group of patrol officers headed to the scene, they were flagged about a second person down from gunfire in grassy area, also in the 700 block of Springville Road.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the carjacking victim, who was found shot outside an apartment, to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Fitzgerald said.

The carjacking suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We believe the first victim we got the call on was coming home when he was approached by multiple suspects,” Fitzgerald said, adding that police believe he was the victim of a carjacking.

The victim returned gunfire, striking the second person, believed to be a suspect in the incident, the officer said.

At around 8:25 p.m. the department’s Real Time Crime Center located the victims vehicle at 10 9th Ave. West in Smithfield, according to Fitzgerald.

As officers approached the vehicle, a male began to flee.

“We have that entire area surrounded,” Fitzgerald said. ‘We have a perimeter set up, we have dispatched our BPD K9 unit to that area and we will deploy our K9 officers in an attempt to search for that suspect.”

Police did not give descriptions of either the at-large suspects or the victim’s vehicle.
