Birmingham fire department increasing staff with new fire academy graduates

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service is growing. Earlier this week, 79 recruits graduated from the fire academy and promoted 44 staff members.

Fire officials have been working to increase staff for a while now as the demand grows.

Mayor Randall Woodfin joined the department at the ceremony this past Wednesday. In the department's Facebook post, it reads, "We know that each firefighter will exhibit our motto of Excellence Through Service."

The celebration became even more special as firefighter De'Angelo London proposed to his girlfriend on stage, in front of everyone.

There was a firefighter promoted to the rank of lieutenant who was recently injured while saving three people during an apartment fire. Chief Cory Moon says he received a standing ovation.
