UPGRADES? WELL, JARVIS, SINCE THE COURTYARD ACTUALLY HAS NOT BEEN RENOVATED SINCE IT OPENED AROUND 1974, IT’S NEEDED A FACELIFT FOR QUITE SOME TIME. WELL, TODAY THE BJCC GAVE THE GREEN LIGHT TO TURN THIS INTO AN INVITING GATHERING SPACE. IT ONCE WAS. THE BJCC RENAISSANCE CONTINUES. ONCE A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO GATHER BEFORE AND AFTER SHOWS, THE PIAZZA HAS BECOME AN OUTDATED, FORGOTTEN BRICK PATH TO THOSE EVENTS. INSTEAD MAKING THAT WHOLE SPACE FEEL, YOU KNOW, CONNECTED TO THE ARENA AND CONNECTED TO THE OTHER VENUES WE HAVE VERSUS JUST KIND OF A LITTLE BIT OF AN OASIS OUT THERE, WHICH HAS BEEN. SO TODAY, THE BJCC BOARD APPROVED A $3.9 MILLION BID TO UPGRADE THE ENTIRE SPACE, WHICH HAS GONE LARGELY UNTOUCHED SINCE OPENING AROUND 1974. UNLIKE THE RECENT $100 MILLION RENOVATION TO THE LEGACY ARENA, THE PIAZZA HAS RECEIVED VERY FEW SIGNIFICANT UPGRADES OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS. SO THE BJCC BELIEVES BY TRANSFORMING IT FROM THIS INTO THIS, THE SPACE WILL RECEIVE NEW LIFE. WE’RE GOING TO MAKE THAT A MUCH MORE WALKABLE, PLEASANT SPACE. GET RID OF SOME OF THE HARDSCAPE MATERIALS THAT ARE IN THERE WITH SOME MORE. YOU KNOW, LANDSCAPING AND GRASS AND FLOWERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. THERE WILL ALSO BE A HALF A MILLION DOLLAR WATER FEATURE AND THIS FORMER RESTAURANT WILL EVENTUALLY COME BACK ONLINE AS AN APPETIZER BAR SPOT. BJCC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TED SNYDER THINKS THE PIAZZA ENHANCEMENTS WILL TURN THE UNUSED SPACE INTO A PLACE WITH A PURPOSE. JUST A LITTLE BIT OF A DATED DESIGN AND MAKE IT MORE RESPONSIVE TO WHAT OUR CONSUMERS EXPECT TODAY AND MAKE IT SOMETHING THAT’S, YOU KNOW, AN ASSET THAT PEOPLE ENJOY BEFORE AN EVENT AND AFTER AN EVENT. STACY WAS AWARDED THE NEARLY $4 MILLION JOB. THEY ARE THE SAME COMPANY HIRED TO CLEAR LAND FOR THE UPCOMING COCA COLA AMPHITHEATER. NOW WORK ON THIS PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO KICK OFF EARLY NEXT YEAR, WITH THE BJCC VISITORS BEING ABLE TO ENJOY THE NEW PIAZZA BY THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER. LI

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

The BJCC's renaissance continues.

Once a place for people to gather before and after shows, the property’s large Piazza has become an outdated, forgotten brick path to those events instead.

“Making that whole space feel, you know, connected to the arena and connected to the other venues we have, versus just kind of a little bit of an oasis out there, which is what it's been,” BJCC Executive Director Tad Snider said.

So Wednesday, the BJCC Board approved a $3.9 million bid to upgrade the entire space, which has gone largely untouched since opening around 1974.

Unlike the recent major renovation of the Legacy Arena, the Piazza has received few significant upgrades over the last 50 years.

So, the BJCC believes by transforming it, the space will receive new life.

“We're going to make that a much more walkable, pleasant space. Get rid of some of the hardscape materials that are in there with some more, you know, landscaping and grass, flowers and things like that,” Snider said.

There will also be a $500,000 water feature.

Plus, the property’s former restaurant will eventually come back online as an appetizer-bar spot.

Snider thinks the enhancements will turn the unused space into a place with a purpose.

“Just a little bit of a dated design and make it more responsive to what our consumers expect today and make it something that's, you know, an asset that people enjoy before an event and after an event,” Snider said.

SDAC is the contractor awarded the job.

They are the same company hired to clear land for the upcoming Coca-Cola Amphitheater four blocks of the BJCC.
