Dozens without homes after fire destroys Fairfield apartments

WITHOUT A LITTLE CONTROVERSY. WVTM 13 NEWS BEGINS WITH BREAKING NEWS AND THAT BREAKING NEWS OUT OF FAIRFIELD THIS MIDDAY, WHERE CREWS ARE WORKING TO PUT OUT AN APARTMENT FIRE. THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. I’M SARAH KILLION. LET’S GET RIGHT OUT TO WVTM 13 S BRYCE OSELEN. HE IS LIVE AND LOCAL AT THAT APARTMENT COMPLEX THERE. BRYCE FIRE CREWS HAVE BEEN OUT THERE FOR A WHILE NOW. YES, FIRE CREWS AND FIRST RESPONDERS HAVE BEEN HERE FOR OVER AN HOUR ATTEMPTING TO PUT OUT THIS. FLAMES THAT ARE IN THIS APARTMENT FIRE. NOT ONLY DO YOU SEE THE SMOKE, BUT YOU CAN ALSO SMELL THE SMOKE FROM BLOCKS AND BLOCKS AWAY. I’M AT THE SERENITY APARTMENTS IN FAIRFIELD, BIRMINGHAM MIDFIELD AND LIPSCOMB FIRE CREWS ARE WORKING ON THE SCENE. FIREFIGHTERS SAY THEY ARE HITTING WHAT THEY ARE CALLING HOTSPOTS AND THIS FIRE IS STILL NOT OUT. THIS ALL CAME FROM ONE OF THE BUILDINGS IN THIS APARTMENT COMPLEX. I’VE BEEN TOLD THAT 30 TO 50 UNITS HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY THIS FIRE. I SPOKE WITH THE DAUGHTER OF A RESIDENT THAT LIVES HERE, AND SHE SAYS SHE’S THANKFUL TO SEE HER MOTHER ESCAPE THE FIRE STILL MAKES ME SAD, YOU KNOW, PULLING UP, SEEING EVERYBODY OUTSIDE SCREAMING WITH THEIR KIDS AND, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE NOT JUST MY MOM LOST THINGS. EVERYBODY THAT STAYED IN THAT COMPLEX ALONE, LOST, LOST THINGS. SO, YOU KNOW, CHRISTMAS IS AROUND THE CORNER AND PEOPLE HAVE CHILDREN. PEOPLE WERE SAVING, GETTING GIFTS, HAD GIFTS STASHED IN CLOSETS AND STUFF LIKE THAT. SO IT’S LIKE THEY LOST EVERYTHING. JUST MADE ME FEEL VERY, VERY, YOU KNOW, VERY DEVASTATED AND VERY SAD. YEAH. AND AGAIN, YOU CAN JUST SEE AND SMELL THE SMOKE FROM BLOCKS AND BLOCKS AWAY. MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS COMMUNITY ARE JUST WAITING TO SEE WHEN AND IF THIS FIRE WILL EVER BE PUT OUT.

FAIRFIELD, Ala. —

Dozens of people are without homes after a fire destroyed Fairfield apartments Thursday morning.

Smoke and flames could be seen from the roof of the apartment as crews battled the fire around 8:30 a.m. for more than 90 minutes.

One building was on fire at Serenity Apartments on Forest Drive which has 30-50 units.

Birmingham, Midfield and Lipscomb fire departments responded to a call for aid.

There were no injuries, but there is significant damage and most units in the building were destroyed.
