Driver killed in fiery interstate crash in Hoover

Traffic officers with the Hoover Police Department are investigating a crash that killed a driver on Interstate 65 early Saturday morning.The Hoover 911 center received a call at 4:22 a.m. of a two-vehicle crash on I-65 South just before the I-459 interchange. Captain Keith Czeskleba said officers arrived on the scene to find a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro and a 1970s model Ford Maverick both fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the Maverick was trapped inside his vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene by medics with the Hoover Fire Department. The driver of the Camaro had minor injuries which did not require hospitalization. Police believe the Maverick was traveling at a very low rate of speed or was stopped on the interstate when it was struck from behind by the Camaro. The interstate reopened after being shut down for a few hours.The name of the victim in the Maverick will be released after the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is able to identify him.
