Could C.J. Uzomah come back from an injury again to play in the Super Bowl?
On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced the former Auburn tight end’s status had been changed from reserve/injured to reserve/injured, designated to return.
That change allowed Uzomah to return to practice with the Eagles on Thursday as Philadelphia prepares to play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at 5:30 p.m. CST Feb. 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
Uzomah has been on injured reserve since Jan. 1. He sustained an abdominal injury during a 41-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 29. Uzomah missed Philadelphia’s regular-season finale and its three victories in the NFC playoffs.
Players placed on injured reserve must miss at least four games before returning.
In the 2021 season, Uzomah suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the Cincinnati Bengals’ 27-24 overtime victory against Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game.
Two weeks later, Uzomah played 49 offensive snaps and had two receptions for 11 yards in Cincinnati’s 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI.
Uzomah reached career highs with 49 receptions for 493 yards and five touchdowns for the Bengals in the 2021 regular season, plus another 15 receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown in Cincinnati’s four postseason contests.
Uzomah does not have a reception for Philadelphia in the 2024 season. He has played in seven games, with three starts, and has been on the field for 138 offensive snaps and 28 special-teams plays in his 10th NFL season.

Uzomah is among the 40 Auburn alumni who have played in the Super Bowl. No former Auburn players appeared in last season’s Super Bowl and neither the Chiefs nor the Eagles has an alumnus of the school on its current active roster.
