'Good to get a win': Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer on the Tide's 52-7 victory over Mercer
Good to get *** win. Uh, and, uh, get *** lot of guys out there on the field. Um, they all put in *** lot of work and, uh, there's that little window that you try to hit where you get the ones that work and you get the score where you need it to be and, and, uh, for the guys to play *** quarter and *** half essentially and get *** lot of guys in the football field. Uh, it, it was, it was fun to see them get out there and play and work on their execution. So, uh, like that we got, uh, three more takeaways. You know, I think there's *** mindset about our defense and three of the first four possessions to do that. Uh, you know, just really like the, like where we're at, you know, we're, we're hunting the ball and, um, offensively, you know, putting the drives there and over at the end of the first half, maybe, you know, had *** field goal there, love to score in the red zone, get *** touchdown. But, um, for the most part, again, taking care of the football, uh, no turnovers and uh, you know, getting the takeaways and, you know, that's where it all starts and so guys worked hard all week long thought they really had ***, you know, *** good demeanor about them, um, you know, working on their sums themselves individually, uh, wanting to build on what we did *** week ago and, uh, you know, going to the tail end of the season here, you know, I think relatively, um, you know, healthy as far as who played today and, and, uh, you know, no one getting seriously dinged up, you know, for next week with Charlie. Yeah. Hey, Coach Robbie scored his first touchdown of the season today. Just what do you think of that play? And what does he mean to your offense? Yeah, he's, he's just kind of *** Swiss army knife for us out there, especially, you know, in the blocking, uh, piece and, um, you know, for him to get down the field and they, they put *** lot of guys up towards the line of scrimmage, that's just, uh, *** part of what they do and they've been very successful with it. Uh, number one, you know, at the F CS level and rush defense, but, um, some play actions there that we got behind him on and, uh, for Robbie to, to haul one in, it was really exciting for our guys, exciting for him. Um, you know, I love to see it so he, uh, he got *** chance as *** senior, uh, to talk to the team last night and, you know, you can just tell the love our team has for him, uh, how much they appreciate the effort. He brings, uh, each and every, each and every day, not just each and every week, but, um, he's got *** mindset ***, *** toughness about him. Um, you know, that just exudes what Alabama football is all about. Left side, front row to the, yeah, you had *** chance to get *** lot of work for your quarterbacks and today, what do you think of some of the guys, uh, who came in after Jalen and what they did, um, Ty, Ty with some scrambles, uh, you know, the, the long one kind of along our sideline. Um, you know, I think people who really know and have watched Ty, probably all of you, you, you can see that he's got that ability, um, can, can do things with his feet, you know, uh, everyone gets tied into Jalen and his running ability, but Ty, uh, Ty is tough to, to, you know, handle it when it comes to running the football too. And so, um, escaping making some plays, you know, uh, the third down, throwing it deep, uh, or fourth down, throwing it deep, you know. Um, that was, uh, you know, if it's picked off, it's picked off, you know, and so, um, smart just to give him *** chance and, you know, find *** way to make *** play. So, um, you know, and I thought, uh, Dylan and Austin coming in and moving the chains, you know, Dylan on 1/4 down, was it fourth down, right, fourth down conversion, Austin coming in, um, laying *** ball, uh, in there along the left sideline for the touchdown. You know, there's that and again, fine window of, uh, trying to let these guys run the offense and get that experience and get an opportunity to do what they work on each and every day. So I was proud of the way they just handled everything uh from the, the execution to just even the procedural things where, you know, making sure guys are lined up before motion, all of that stuff. So, you know, I thought it was *** good day for all of them as *** whole. How big was it to get *** non-offensive touchdown? And just, is that one of those things that you guys can kind of build on? Is it almost like you break the seal with, with those? Yeah, those are exciting. I mean, you know, the guys, uh you know, talk about it and, you know, when they come up short and they think they had *** chance to score, you know, they always hear about you should have kept it along this sideline or cut back and uh for us to, to, you know, get him in the end zone um with that long return it was, uh, you know, something that's exciting for the whole team because they, um, have gotten the takeaways. Uh, we just hadn't ended up with one in the end zone like that. So, uh, I love the mindset again, going back to what the defense is doing. Um, they're attacking, um, they're, you know, three and out is, uh, you know what they're shooting for. But, uh, right now the position, position, they're putting our offense and getting points on the board now too. Um, it's, it's really good. Hey, Kelly, um, kind of on that same vein. Uh, why did you want to see, I guess the defense play *** couple more extra or the first team defense play *** couple more extra drives than, uh, the second team offense, uh, you know, heading into the fourth quarter, I guess. Yeah. Uh, well, I think first of all, um, there's *** lot of guys rotating in on defense to begin with. Uh, and so, I mean, there's *** lot of young guys we already have on the football field, uh, with the ones and then, you know, there's less experience even when you put the twos out there and *** lot of that one and two is, is in rotation up front, um, in the secondary and then, you know, the score isn't completely, you know, lopsided and when you start putting your, your next guys in, uh, with the offense, you know, you want to be careful just to make sure the game can stay and nothing crazy happens. But uh um I know that you probably, you know, that you felt like it was in jeopardy. But you know, those are just things that you want to be careful of make sure you can get through the quarter and then get into the fourth. But again, we play, *** lot of guys are ready, you know, uh before you even get to substituting. Um you know, they're in the latter part of the game. Second round ride, Katie, you hit on this *** little bit in your opening. But what did you see from the team this week and their focus and intensity making sure they didn't have *** mental letdown in the game like today. Yeah. You know, we've, we've really, as we get to the latter half of the season, um really honed in on, you know, more and more leaders stepping up, um take care of yourself, uh you know, own, own what you do and take care of that and then bring someone else with you and uh the intensity in practice. I it's, it's not like guys are flying off the walls and things like that, but there's *** focus uh that they bring and there's *** uh just ***, *** businesslike approach uh where they know that they gotta do this, uh they gotta eat right, sleep, right. Do all those things off the field, uh take care of the business there and, um, you know, it leads to the success that they, they had. Um, but when they do those things, right. You know, and you invest, uh that's, you know, investing in, uh improving yourself and improving our team and that's, uh what I thought they did and, you know, there's, there's downstairs. I know some of the upper class men, um, you know, talking about how much they appreciate the young guys and how happy we were that, uh, some of those guys got *** chance to go out there. You know, they're giving scout team looks all week long, all season long and, uh, you know, for them to get out there and have *** little success and enjoy the moment was great, was great. And, uh the whole team's happy for them. Coach, he doesn't have that c on his chest, but Jehad Campbell's game has just jumped these last few weeks. What's add to that and the intent that he brings to that defense? What was that? What the intent that he brings to that defense, Campbell? Um Yeah, I mean, you know, again, that's *** great example of, you know, you don't have to have the see to be *** leader and Jihad is exactly that he's been *** leader for us ever since I can remember, I've counted on him. I go to him, uh, you know, uh expecting, uh big things expecting that leadership. Um, you know, he's geek and run it starts there. But I think just the more and more he just plays ball, executes the plays, uh, you know, understands what our defense is and how it matches up against what he see, what he's seeing, trusting the others around him, not trying to do too much and just attacking, you know, he's feeling it and, uh, there's, you know, confidence, uh, that he has that, uh, you know, you can see coming out in the playmaking ability and, you know, that's not just him but *** lot of guys, but, uh, it starts with, you know, some of those guys that are making the plays consistently and Jihad's one of them, uh, coach through nine games so far this season, how have you really seen the offensive line grow together and kind of going back to what Katie said, just have that attention to detail and not lack focus. Yeah, you know, there's, there's gonna be plays. Um, you know, we didn't have any sacks today. I know we got hit *** couple of times, we had *** little pressure but, um, you know, I think there's, there's things, you know, last week was *** huge step running the football and just moving people and, uh, you know, there's little little adjustments, little tweaks, we, you know, played Geno *** lot at right guard. Um, just to give Jaden. Jaden could have, could have been out there and played for us. Um, but, you know, it's good to get gino out there and we got to continue to build that depth and um I think, I think the more in sync, uh you really don't see any bus and it's been going on for many weeks now. You don't see bus. They've been really consistent and um you know, the execution's been good and they're just trying to make the execution better and better and better each and every week, both in the, in the, in the pass protection and uh the run game. Yeah, just what has impressed you the most about Ryan Williams freshman season that he's having right now, probably just how he handles it all. I mean, he's *** player, you know, uh that, you know, comes to work every day. Um Nothing goes to his head. Uh He's, he's about the team. He really is. And, uh, you know, when, when we, when we call up on him or when we, we need to make *** play, he's ready and uh he's just consistent each and every day. Uh you know, just *** joy to be around, got *** smile on his face. Uh I've been challenging him to be *** leader, you know, because obviously we're looking to him as *** guy, that's one of our playmakers and um the respect the whole team has, has been there really since day one because of how hard he does work. Uh and then the production as well. So, uh it's, it's just I think how he handles everything is just as *** maturity about him. That's well beyond his years. I think we know how old he is, right? So, uh but uh you know, it just, it, it's really cool and I'm proud of him and I'm proud of the way that the guys uh just have really, you know, rallied around him at times, but I'm proud of the way he just, you know, puts the team first, uh always. Yeah. Thank you. Roll to.
