In less than a week, three children under the age of 5 across Jefferson County have been injured or killed after finding a firearm. This has parents and gun advocates stressing the importance of gun safety.The vice president of Bama Carry told WVTM 13 parents need to hold themselves more accountable and make sure they’re keeping firearms out of a child’s reach.Paul Arnold said he’s been a gun owner for more than 40 years, but he’s never left it out for any of his kids or grandkids to get a hold of. Even when simply getting out of the car to get gas or even in the comfort of his own home, he’s made it a routine to always have his gun tucked in a holster hanging from his pants. He said putting a lock on a gun or buying a gun safe is the best practice, but if you don’t have either, keeping the gun on you at all times is the easiest way to keep it out of a child’s hands.It sounds like a simple solution to keep a child safe, but it’s all about creating a routine and educating them about the dangers of a gun.“You wouldn’t keep a lighter and a gas can sitting out there for a kid to play with,” Arnold said. “You teach them the stove is hot. Don’t stick a fork in the plug. Same way with firearms. The biggest thing is they shouldn’t have access to them.”Arnold suggests if you don’t have access to a gun lock or a gun safe, reaching out to your local police department or sheriff’s office. He said they give them out pretty often.
