Near 100°F Friday afternoon, still hot with storms Saturday
WELL, I MEAN, ACTUALLY, YOU’RE GOING TO SEE ANY COOLNESS THIS WEEKEND? ONLY IF YOU GET A THUNDERSTORM. THAT’S ABOUT IT. AND IT DID HELP TODAY OVER EAST ALABAMA. ANISTON’S BEEN IN THE 80S, BUT BIRMINGHAM HAS BEEN IN THE UPPER 90S. THIS AFTERNOON. WE’RE AT 97 IN THE CITY RIGHT NOW WITH A HEAT INDEX OR A FEELS LIKE AT 105 AND FEELS LIKE MIGHT BE A BIT DECEIVING. YOU DON’T JUST WALK OUTSIDE AND FEEL THIS THE SAME WAY THAT THE WIND CHILL WORKS. THIS IS MORE OF THE STRESS THAT THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY ARE PUTTING ON YOUR BODY BECAUSE IT JUST CAN’T COOL ITSELF IN A NATURAL WAY. WVTM 13. LIVE DOPPLER. NO SIGNIFICANT RAIN. WE DID HAVE ONE HEAVY THUNDERSTORM UP IN LAMAR COUNTY JUST ABOUT AN HOUR AGO. THAT’S BEEN REDUCED TO A VERY SMALL SHOWER. BASICALLY A SPRINKLE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF ALICE VILLE AND MCMULLEN IN IN BETWEEN HIGHWAY 14 AND HIGHWAY 17 OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN PART OF PICKENS COUNTY FROM BIRMINGHAM AND TUSCALOOSA EASTWARD, WE HAD THAT ONE THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX ROLL THROUGH EARLIER, AND I THINK THE RADAR WILL LOOK SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THIS TOMORROW AFTERNOON, TOMORROW EVENING. BUT A LOT OF THOSE STORMS MAY BE CONCENTRATED A BIT CLOSER INTO JEFFERSON. SHELBY TUSCALOOSA, SAINT CLAIR, CALHOUN COUNTIES TOMORROW, TEMPERATURE ON SATURDAY, CLOSE TO 100 HEAT INDEX, OVER 105. SO ALMOST A REPEAT OF TODAY. BUT WE WILL HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF STORMS AND SOME OF THOSE COULD BE STRONG WITH SOME GUSTY WINDS, SOME HAIL, A LOT OF LIGHTNING INVOLVED HERE. TWO, THERE’S AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN THE PINK AND THE ORANGE. IT’S A HEAT ADVISORY. AND IN BOTH CASES, JUST LIMIT THE TIME THAT YOU’RE OUTDOORS IF YOU CAN. AND SINCE IT’S NOT GETTING ALL THAT COOL TONIGHT, DROPPING INTO THE MID 70S, MOST AIR CONDITIONERS ARE GOING TO RUN ALL NIGHT LONG. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING, MAKE SURE YOU’RE CHECKING ON THEM AND HELPING MAKE SURE THAT THEY STAY COOL AND SAFE IN THIS HEAT TOMORROW AFTERNOON. NOW, THESE ARE NOT NORMAL HIGH TEMPERATURES. THIS IS JUST MID. AFTERNOON BETWEEN 95 AND 100 AND THE HEAT INDEX AT THE HOTTEST POINT OF THE DAY BETWEEN 105 AND 110 AROUND HERE GOING UP TO 110. LOOK AT MUSCLE SHOALS AND HUNTSVILLE COULD BE EVEN HOTTER UP IN THE TENNESSEE VALLEY THAN IT IS HERE ACROSS THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE. NOW, WE ALSO HAVE TO DEAL WITH SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF FUEL AROUND FOR THESE THINGS BACKED. WE’RE UP HERE ON THE TOP END OF THE CHART. SO AS WE GET INTO THAT EXTREME INSTABILITY LIKE THIS, SOME OF THESE STORMS COULD BE VERY, VERY POWERFUL AND BECOME SEVERE WITH NOT A LOT OF ADVANCE WARNING. SO IF YOU START TO SEE THE SKY GET DARK, YOU HEAR THE THUNDER, YOU FEEL THE WIND MOVE, WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING OUTDOORS INSIDE. AND TOMORROW EVENING, ESPECIALLY AROUND METRO BIRMINGHAM, JEFFERSON, SHELBY, TUSCALOOSA COUNTIES, IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE SURE YOU GOT THE WVTM 13 APP TO GET ANY LIGHTNING ALERTS. IF IT’S WITHIN TEN MILES, YOU’RE NOT SAFE TO BE OUTDOORS. SCATTERED STORMS HELPING TO BREAK THE HEAT SOME THROUGH THE 4TH OF JULY AND NEXT WEEK. BUT IT DOES NOT GET COOL AND COMFORTABLE AROUND HER
