Legendary jazz musician awarded with star on Birmingham's 'Walk of Fame'
The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and Urban Impact awarded the first star on the Alabama Walk of Fame in more than 30 years.
The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and Urban Impact awarded the first star on the Alabama Walk of Fame in more than 30 years. The star was dedicated to Birmingham native and jazz musician Henry Otto Blankenship.Blankenship was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in October 1981. He also performed with legendary stars such as Lou Rawls, Lionel Hampton and Erskine Hawkins throughout his career.An unveiling ceremony to highlight Blankenship was held Saturday, July 1, at 1725 3rd Ave North directly in front of Jazzi's on 3rd.Family and friends of Blankenship were in attendance at the event including an appearance from Mayor Randall Woodfin.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and Urban Impact awarded the first star on the Alabama Walk of Fame in more than 30 years to Henry 'Otto' Blankenship.
The recognition highlights the musician's significant contributions and remarkable impact on the Alabama entertainment industry.
Blankenship was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in October 1981. He graduated from A.H. Parker High School and Hampton Institute.
He received critical acclaim for his professional recording, "I've Only Myself to Blame." Blankenship performed with legendary stars such as Lou Rawls, Lionel Hampton, Erskine Hawkins, and Amos Gordon throughout his career.
The star unveiling ceremony took place across from Jazzi's on 3rd on Saturday, July 1st, at 4:00 p.m.
The event was attended by Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, City Councilman Darrell O'Quinn, along with other city leaders and prominent figures from the Birmingham entertainment community.
