Man driving with small child shot, killed on busy highway in Birmingham's Huffman area

Police are investigating a man's shooting death on a busy highway in Birmingham's Huffman area Monday morning.Officers were called to a shooting just before 8 a.m. on Gadsden Highway and Parkway East near a shopping center.When they arrived they found a man slumped over in a pickup truck with a young boy inside, according to police. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews pronounced the man dead at the scene.The child was not hurt and was rescued from the truck by people at the scene. Investigators say the man was driving when someone pulled up alongside him and fired multiple shots at him.About 4 p.m. Monday, the Birmingham Police Department reported the victim had been identified as Enrique Cortes, 45, of Birmingham.Cortes' 5-year-old grandson was with him in the truck, said police.WVTM 13 was the first television station on the scene when crews saw an ambulance leaving. The victim's truck was still in the road and some lanes were closed.Lanes were reopened to traffic on Parkway East after the investigation was completed.There is no one in custody.Police are using surveillance cameras from surrounding businesses to track down the suspect's vehicleThis is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available. Police are investigating a man's shooting death on a busy highway in Birmingham's Huffman area Monday morning.

Officers were called to a shooting just before 8 a.m. on Gadsden Highway and Parkway East near a shopping center.

When they arrived they found a man slumped over in a pickup truck with a young boy inside, according to police.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews pronounced the man dead at the scene.
