Impact Weather: another round of scattered strong storms on a hot, humid Friday
SO YOU’LL KNOW FIRST, THIS IS WVTM 13 WEATHER. SO OUR IMPACT WEATHER FOR THURSDAY NIGHT HAS ENDED A FEW ISOLATED SHOWERS ARE STILL LEFT OVER, BUT TOMORROW IT’S ANOTHER THREAT OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS. THE TWO PRIMARY ISSUES HERE, I THINK, ARE HEAVY DOWNPOURS AND LIGHTNING THAT COULD CAUSE SOME ISSUES FOR OUTDOOR EVENTS ON FRIDAY EVENING, MAINLY FROM BIRMINGHAM WESTWARD, BUT ALL OF CENTRAL ALABAMA. WE’VE GOT TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THIS. AGAIN, WIND GUSTS OVER 40, MAYBE AS HIGH AS 60, AND SOME SMALL HAIL POSSIBLE WITH SOME OF THOSE STORMS, TOO. SO WHERE HAS THE RAIN BEEN? AND SOME COMMUNITIES IT HASN’T RAINED AT ALL THIS WEEK. AND IN SOME IT HAS RAINED FAR TOO MUCH. THE REDS AND THE BROWNS AND THE WHITES HERE REPRESENT ANYTHING FROM ABOUT THREE TO AS MUCH AS SEVEN INCHES OF RAIN. JUST GOING BACK TO MONDAY. AND THEN THERE’S THIS NARROW BAND THAT’S ABOUT 40 MILES WIDE. LAMAR FAYETTE WALKER THROUGH PARTS OF JEFFERSON, SAINT CLAIR, TALLADEGA CALHOUN, CHEROKEE COUNTY, WHERE IT HAD RAINED, THAT MUCH AT ALL. THEN THERE’S ANOTHER BAND NORTH OF THERE THROUGH CULLMAN AND WINSTON AND MARION AND FRANKLIN COUNTIES, WHERE IT HAS COME DOWN BY THE BUCKET LOAD. MITCHELL DAM OVER FOUR INCHES OF RAIN, OVER THREE INCHES OF RAIN IN SHELBY JUST NORTH OF THAT, UP THE COOSA RIVER IN SHELBY COUNTY, 3.2IN IN GREENSBORO OVER TWO IN PELHAM, ALMOST TO AN ADDISON AND THEN WITH A DOWNPOUR THIS EVENING, BIRMINGHAM UP JUST ABOVE A QUARTER INCH OF RAIN OFFICIALLY AT THE AIRPORT. SO THE RECORD AT THE AIRPORT GOING TO SHOW NOTHING LIKE WHAT THE REST OF THE STATE HAS BEEN LIKE THROUGH THIS EXTREMELY ACTIVE WEATHER HERE IN LATE JUNE. ONE LEFTOVER HEAVY DOWNPOUR THAT IS JUST EAST OF JENA. NOW MOVING TO THE EAST AROUND FOSTER’S. AND THEN COMING UP ON THE RIVER TOWARD THE BLACK WARRIOR PARKWAY, JOE MALCOLM PARKWAY, ANOTHER GOOD DOWNPOUR RIGHT ON TOP OF UTAH. IT’S RAINING ALMOST ON THE CITY LIMITS AND NOWHERE ELSE. DOWNPOURS MOVING SOUTH OF GREENSBORO OVER INTO PERRY COUNTY. TWO WVTM 13 LIVE DOPPLER BEEN TRACKING LOTS OF STORMS LATELY AND WE’RE GOING TO DO IT AGAIN TOMORROW. BUT WE DO GET SOMEWHAT OF A BREAK THROUGH TONIGHT IN EARLY TOMORROW MORNING WITH ALL THE HEAVY DOWNPOURS DOWN TO OUR SOUTH AND OUT TO OUR WEST HERE. IN THE SHORT TERM. BUT ALL OF THIS ACTION IS GOING TO WIND UP OVER PARTS OF SOUTHWESTERN ALABAMA EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. AND WATCH WHAT IT DOES TO THE INSTABILITY. WE DON’T HAVE QUITE AS MUCH FUEL AVAILABLE TO THE SOUTH, BUT THE AIR AROUND HERE GROWS VERY UNSTABLE. AGAIN TOMORROW AFTERNOON. AND SOME OF THESE STORMS THAT POP UP AFTER. 3 OR 4 P.M. COULD GET PRETTY HEAVY AS WE LOOK AT THE STRENGTH OF THEM, HOW TALL THEY ARE AND IF THEY’RE ROTATING OR NOT. ROTATION DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN TORNADOES, BUT IT OFTEN MEANS THAT WE’VE GOT STORMS THAT ARE CAPABLE OF SOME LARGE HAIL. SO TUSCALOOSA, BIBB, PARTS OF SHELBY COUNTY MAY GET SOME PRETTY INTENSE STORMS YET AGAIN COMING UP ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND FRIDAY EVENING. THEY WON’T LAST ALL THAT LONG. UPPER 60S, WARM AND MUGGY IN THE MORNING, SCATTERED AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS, HIGH TEMPERATURES GETTING INTO THE UPPER 80S TOMORROW AWAY FROM THOSE DOWNPOURS. ANOTHER CHANCE OF SOME SCATTERED STORMS ON SATURDAY. THE GREATER RISK OF A SEVERE STORM WOULD BE DOWN TO THE SOUTH OF THE BIRMINGHAM AREA ON SATURDAY. BUT ON SUNDAY, WE’LL BE WATCHING FOR STRONG STORMS AREA WIDE WITH FREQUENT LIGHTNING DAMAGING WIND GUSTS, HAIL AND FLASH FLOODING. THE MAIN TIME THERE FOR SUNDAY WOULD BE ABOUT 6 A.M. TO 3 P.M. AND THEN WE JUST DON’T STOP. MORE STORMS NEXT WEEK, BUT THEY WILL BE SOMEWHAT SPOTTY AND MAYBE A LITTLE MORE TAME THAN THEY HAVE BEEN THIS WEEK. YOU WENT TO COLLEGE? I DID.

Impact Weather: another round of scattered strong storms on a hot, humid Friday
Thursday's Impact Weather ended as storms fizzled around 10 PM. Friday sees more heavy storms in the afternoon and evening, and that's why it is yet another Alabama Impact Day. Check the video forecast for the latest. ANOTHER IMPACT DAY FRIDAYThis week’s storms blasted Alabama with heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and tornadoes, and more stormy weather blows up Friday into the weekend. Friday’s threat is low-end for most of the state; however, two rounds of storms bring an elevated threat for mainly western and southwestern counties Friday morning and again in the evening.Away from the two larger waves of storms, it gets hot in the afternoon: temperatures rising to the middle and upper 80s with a light west-northwest wind and a chance of a few hit-or-miss storms. Round One: A robust thunderstorm complex moves across Mississippi into western Alabama overnight and early Friday morning. A few storms may be severe with gusty winds and hail southwest of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa: Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Dallas, Marengo Counties southward to the Gulf Coast. Some showers may move as far north as the Birmingham metro area between 5 AM and 8 AM, but most of the active storms miss the city Friday morning. Spotty Storms: A hot humid Friday afternoon serves up a few hit-or-miss, unevenly-scattered, locally-heavy storms between noon and 7 PM. Most of these will not be ‘severe’ by definition, but wind gusts over 30 mph and dangerous lightning are possible.Round Two: A weak disturbance focuses some of the energy available for storms over western Alabama Friday evening, and that sets up a more widespread scattering of heavy – possibly severe – storms from 5 PM to 10 PM west of Interstate 65 and generally south of the Tuscaloosa area.FATHER'S DAY WEEKEND: HOT, HUMID, AND MORE IMPACT WEATHERThe Storm Prediction Center maintains a risk of a few severe storms in Alabama both Saturday and Sunday.Saturday’s threat is minimal. Most of Alabama is storm-free on Saturday: only a few isolated downpours develop in the afternoon and evening as temperatures soar to the low-90s.Another significant threat of severe storms develops on Saturday night and Sunday across the South. Thunderstorms develop in Oklahoma and Arkansas Saturday night, and they head east toward Alabama through Sunday morning. The main threats appear to be high wind gusts over 50 MPH and hail along with some heavy rainfall and dangerous lightning from around 6 AM to 3 PM Sunday.Total rainfall Friday through Sunday night ends up around 0.5”-2” for most of North and Central Alabama If you have outdoor activities planned for the weekend, keep in mind that there is no real skill in predicting a single thunderstorm to a single spot. We see the environment where storms develop much better than we can see the ‘storm’ itself ahead of time. We only have six days above 90 degrees so far this season; we would typically have at least 10 by now. Saturday looks like the hottest day of the next week to ten days. Temperatures hover in the 80s by day and 60s/low-70s at night through most of next week. A persistent low near the East Coast keeps the hottest weather away from Alabama here in the short-term. It still gets hot enough with a few days near 90 now and then, but this is far from the searing heat that some of our guidance projected a few weeks ago.CLICK TO SEE THE 7-DAY FORECAST—Stay weather awareGet the free WVTM 13 app and turn on the alerts for the latest weather updates. For the latest Birmingham weather information and central Alabama's certified most accurate forecast, watch WVTM 13 News.Current Weather ConditionsHourly Forecast | 10-Day ForecastInteractive RadarBirmingham SkycamsLive Doppler RadarSign Up For Email Weather AlertsDownload the WVTM 13 AppDon't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
