Hoover City Council considering third wholesale warehouse club
ABOUT, JOHN? WELL, GUY, THE HOOVER PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION IS CONSIDERING PUTTING A 12 TO 16 GAS PUMP OR GAS STATION AT THIS PROPERTY. BUT NEARBY RESIDENTS ARE WORRIED THAT THE ADDITIONAL VEHICLES WILL TURN THE CONGESTED AREA INTO A TRAFFIC NIGHTMARE. THIS WOODED AREA COULD SOON BE TRANSFORMED HOME TO DO A NEW SHOPPING MECCA ON VALLEY DALE ROAD. WE’RE GOING TO TRY TO TURN LEFT. THAT’S WHAT BOTHERS NEARBY RESIDENT ALAN BAKER AND SOME OF HIS NEIGHBORS. YOU’RE GOING TO BE DUMPING TOO MUCH WATER IN A BUCKET. IT’S JUST GOING TO OVERFLOW. HOOVER IS CONSIDERING PLANS TO BUILD A BIG BOX DEVELOPMENT BETWEEN INVERNESS CENTER DRIVE AND HIGHWAY 280. IS IT YOUR UNDERSTANDING THAT IT’S A WHOLESALE CLUBHOUSE TYPE BUSINESS? THAT THAT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING THAT THAT’S THE NATURE AND CHARACTER OF IT. THE DEVELOPER HAS NOT ANNOUNCED A SPECIFIC WHOLESALE WAREHOUSE CLUB, BUT THE COURT IS WORRIED WITH THE NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS. SUCH STORES DRAW THE BACK OF A DEAL. AND HIGHWAY 280 COULD BECOME INTOLERABLE. IT’S A TERRIBLE INTERSECTION THAT THEIR OWN TRAFFIC STUDY RATES AS AN F. SO IT’S KIND OF A FAILING GRADE EVEN BEFORE THIS THING OPENS. TONIGHT, THE CITY IS CONSIDERING THE DEVELOPER’S REQUEST FOR A GAS STATION ON THE PROPERTY, SOMETHING THAT MCCORD SAYS COULD BE AN ISSUE IN THE MIDDLE OF A DENSE RESIDENTIAL AREA HERE. THE CONCERN IS WITH NEIGHBORS JUST BEHIND THE STORE IS THAT IT COULD LEAK. OR IF THERE’S A SPILL OF SOME SORT INTO LAKE. HEATHER AND PACKARD BELIEVES THE INFRASTRUCTURE CANNOT SUPPORT WHAT THE 20 ACRE DEVELOPMENT WOULD DEMAND. IT’S JUST MISPLACED ACCESS IN AND OUT FOR THEIR TRUCKS AND GASOLINE TRUCKS IF THAT GOES THROUGH, WOULD JUST BE A NIGHTMARE. FOLLOWING TONIGHT’S PLANNING AND ZONING MEETING, FINAL CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL IS STILL WEEKS AWAY. WELL, THAT MEETING TONIGHT, THE PLANNING AND ZONING MEETING BEGINS IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES. Some residents are pushing back against a proposed wholesale warehouse club.It would be built on Valleydale Drive between Inverness Center Drive and Highway 280.Monday night, the developer asked the Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission for a zoning variance to put gas pumps on the property.Some residents are worried the project could make the already congested stretch of Valleydale Road even worse. "It's a terrible intersection that their own traffic study rates as an F, So it's kind of a failing grade even before this thing opens," nearby resident Alan Picard said.There has been a petition circulating in opposition to the 100,000-square-foot big box store and its potential impact in a heavily residential area."It's simply that this size, what we'll call a big box, has no place here. It just doesn't have the right access for it," Picard said.A final Hoover City Council vote is still a few weeks away.
