After surviving Tuesday’s single-elimination first round with a 4-0 win over Kentucky, Alabama entered the double elimination portion of the SEC baseball tournament Wednesday.
Alabama, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, started at 5:50 p.m. CT against top-seeded Florida at the Hoover Met. The start of the game was delayed from 4:30 p.m. because of Arkansas vs. Texas A&M needing extra innings to be decided.
Alabama entered Wednesday ranked No. 10 in RPI and competing to host a regional as a No. 1 seed in next month’s NCAA tournament. Florida entered ranked No. 6 in RPI and No. 2 in the coaches poll.
Here were the updates as the game unfolded:
Bottom 11th: A lead-off single forced Aidan Moza from the game after four and one-third innings, and he was replaced by Alton Davis II. The Tide’s third pitcher allowed consecutive singles, with the final scoring a run to make the score Alabama 6, Florida 4. The next batter crushed a three-run home run to end the game, Florida 7, Alabama 6.
Top 11th: Dominic Tamez led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Camden Hayslip, who advanced to third base on a single by Ed Johnson. Mac Guscette then bunted and Hayslip held at third base, but Florida still threw to home before first base, with Guscette being hit in the back by the throw. That initially appeared to score a run but it was called back -- and confirmed upon Alabama challenge -- that Guscette interfered with the throw. Caden Rose then struck out for the second out. Johnson stole second uncontested and Jim Jarvis was intentionally walked to bring up Tommy Seidl with the bases loaded. Seidl blasted a double over the right fielder’s head and cleared the bases, making the score Alabama 6, Florida 3. Drew Williamson then sent the game to the bottom of the 11th with a ground out.
Bottom 10th: Florida’s lead-off batter Dale Thomas reached on a single. But a failed sacrifice bunt was caught for the first out and the runner was caught stealing for the second out. Then Moza got a strikeout to end the inning.
Top 10th: Tommy Seidl reached on a one-out single for Alabama, and Andrew Pinckney reached on a two-out walk. Colby Shelton smashed two hard foul balls down the right field line before striking out to strand the runners.
Bottom 9th: Moza retired Florida in order and has now pitched three and one-third innings without a hit allowed.
Top 9th: Alabama went down in order.
Bottom 8th: Moza allowed a lead-off walk and the second batter bunted, with Moza’s throw going wide of first baseman Drew Williamson and into right field. That throwing error allowed the first runner to score, tying the game, Alabama 3, Florida 3. Alabama challenged the call but it stood. The second runner was advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly to the left field warning track, and the next batter was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners with one out. Moza struck out the next batter with the trailing runner advancing to second base. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Moza got a strike out to end the inning.
Top 8th: Andrew Pinckney walked and stole second for Alabama but was stranded.
Bottom 7th: The Gators went down in order, including a diving catch by center fielder Caden Rose to end the inning.
Top 7th: Alabama was retired in order as it held its one-run lead.
Bottom 6th: Luke Holman allowed a two-out walk and was pulled after throwing his 101st pitch. He was replaced by Aidan Moza. The base runner was thrown out attempting to steal second base, ending the inning. The call was confirmed after a Florida challenge.
Top 6th: Colby Shelton hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to give Alabama its first lead, Alabama 3, Florida 2. After Dominic Tamez walked, Florida made a pitching change from Hurston Waldrep to Ryan Slater. Tamez reached third base on a single by Ed Johnson. A pop-up by Mac Guscette stranded the two runners and ended the inning.
Bottom 5th: Florida reached on a lead-off single, but with one out, Florida’s Cade Kurland struck out and base runner Dale Thomas tried to steal second base. Catcher Dominic Tamez’s throw hit pitcher Luke Holman in the back and Thomas was called for interference for the double play.
Top 5th: Ed Johnson reached on a lead-off walk and was advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Caden Rose put runners on the corners with one out. Jim Jarvis then hit a hard line drive to the right fielder, with Johnson scoring from third base to tie the game, Florida 2, Alabama 2. Tommy Seidel struck out to end the inning.
Bottom 4th: Holman retired Florida in order. He has settled down since his shaky start, and has thrown 68 pitches through four innings to help protect Alabama’s bullpen.
Top 4th: Alabama started to get going with two outs when Drew Williamson singled and Andrew Pinckney was hit by a pitch. Williamson then scored on a single by Colby Shelton to make the score Florida 2, Alabama 1. With runners on the corners and two outs, Dominic Tamez struck out swinging.
Bottom 3rd: The Gators’ second batter reached on a walk but the inning ended on a double play.
Top 3rd: Only nine batters through three innings for Alabama, which goes down in order again.
