IT’S RICK WOODFIELD. AND BASEBALL IS COMING HOME AFTER DAYS OF SPECULATION. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS MAKING IT OFFICIAL. THE CARDINALS AND GIANTS WILL PLAY AT AMERICA’S OLDEST BALLPARK NEXT YEAR. HOWEVER, THAT’S ONLY PART OF THE EXCITEMENT. RICK WOOD CLASSIC IS ALSO MAKING A COMEBACK. WVTM. THIRTEEN’S. CHIP SCARBOROUGH. ON TOP OF THE STORY FOR US TONIGHT, LIVE AT RICK WOOD. RIGHT NOW, CHIP, WE KNOW THE DATES FOR BOTH GAMES. OH, WE SURE DO. BRITTANY AND IAN, MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR ONE YEAR FROM TONIGHT. THE ENTIRE PLAYING SURFACE IS GOING TO BE REDONE. THE OUTFIELD WALLS ARE GOING TO BE PADDED, THE DUGOUTS ARE GOING TO BE LENGTHENED AND EXTENDED AND WIDENED. AND JUST TWO DAYS BEFORE THE MLB GAME, THE RICK WOOD CLASSIC RETURNS TO RICK WOOD FIELD WITH THE BIRMINGHAM BARONS AND MONTGOMERY BISCUITS. One year from now, the sports world will have its eye on Birmingham. As soon as you walk into Rickwood Field, you can feel the potential. That potential will be maximized next summer when Major League Baseball hosts a special regular season game there. "I'm as excited as anyone could possibly be!" Friends of Rickwood Field board chairman Gerald Watkins says. "We've been working on this for a long time and we've had to keep it under our belts."Not anymore though as the news became official on Tuesday. The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will face-off at Rickwood Field on June 20, 2024. There is much work to be done to prep for such a major event. "The entire playing surface is going to be redone," Watkins explains. "The outfield walls are going to be padded. The dugouts are going to be lengthened and extended and widened."The latest: Sports coverage from WVTM 13 NewsJust two days before the MLB game, The Rickwood Classic returns to Rickwood Field with the Birmingham Barons and Montgomery Biscuits. "It's always special for our organization and for the entire community to be able to turn back the clock," Birmingham Barons president and general manager Jonathan Nelson says. "To connect so many different generations of Barons and baseball fans. And to really be able to enjoy baseball in the truest sense without all the bells and whistles."The games will take place around Juneteenth and include a tribute to the Negro Leagues. That includes Willie Mays, its greatest living player. "I can't tell you how excited we are to hope that Willie can be here," Watkins adds. "Willie is in his 90's.
