Severe thunderstorms spell another wet weekend for central Alabama

IF YOU DON’T KNOW, WE GOT THE FORECAST THE WEEKEND, RATHER. COMING UP, THE FORECAST. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING AT SATURDAY? SUNDAY, WE HAVE IMPACT WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND BECAUSE OF HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS. AGAIN, STOP ME IF YOU’VE HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE. WE WILL HAVE THE SAME KIND OF IMPACT THAT THUNDERSTORMS HAVE HAD FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKENDS WHERE SOME OF THEM ARE SEVERE, POTENTIALLY WITH STRONG, GUSTY WINDS, HAIL, LOTS AND LOTS OF LIGHTNING AND SOME LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN, THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON ARE NOT QUITE AS WIDESPREAD AS THEY HAVE BEEN LATELY. BUT CHECK OUT TALLADEGA COUNTY. THIS AREA BETWEEN TALLADEGA, ALPINE, WALDO AND SYLACAUGA HAS JUST BEEN POUNDED WITH HEAVY RAIN FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS, OVER TWO INCHES OF RAIN ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SYLACAUGA. AND THERE’S MORE COMING DOWN HIGHWAY 77 INTO CLAY COUNTY AND JUST ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SYLACAUGA WINTER BURROW ALPINE. THIS IS TRACKING DOWN TOWARD THE SOUTHEAST INTO MOSTLY THE WESTERN PART OF CLAY COUNTY OVER WEST OF LINEVILLE AND ASHLAND. CLOSE TO ALABAMA. 148 IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY RIGHT THERE IN COOSA COUNTY, THAT’S A RAIN COOLED AIR THAT’S SPREADING OVER HERE TOWARDS CHILTON COUNTY. SO SOME SCATTERED STORMS MAY DEVELOP THERE. WE HAVE A HANDFUL OF STORMS UP HERE IN BLOUNT COUNTY, WESTERN ETOWAH COUNTY, AND NOW ONE THAT’S DEVELOPING RIGHT ON TOP OF THE HANCEVILLE AREA AND THEN OVER TOWARD WESTERN BLOUNT COUNTY. ISOLATED STORMS LIKE THIS. THEY’RE GOING TO BE AROUND WITH US THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE EVENING. THE SEVERE RISK TODAY IS FAIRLY LOW, BUT ANYTHING THAT DEVELOPS WILL CERTAINLY HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE PRETTY HEAVY. NOT MUCH AROUND BIRMINGHAM AT THE MOMENT, BUT THE FARTHER WEST WE GO, WE LOOK AT STORMS DEVELOPING CLOSE TO OAKMAN AND BARRY AND THEN A FEW HEAVY DOWNPOURS IN PARTS OF TUSCALOOSA COUNTY AND PICKENS COUNTY TWO. IN FACT, THOSE IN PICKENS COUNTY AND WEST TUSCALOOSA COUNTY ARE STARTING TO GROW UP A LITTLE TALLER. ALL OF THIS IS TRACKING DOWN TOWARD THE SOUTHEAST AT ABOUT 20MPH. SO IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD YOUR DOSE OF RAIN IN THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS, CHANCES ARE PRETTY GOOD THAT YOU’RE GOING TO GET SOME LOOK AT THIS DISTURBANCE OUT HERE OVER OKLAHOMA, ANOTHER ONE COMING OUT OF NEW MEXICO INTO TEXAS. THIS IS PART OF THE JETSTREAM, WHICH IS UNUSUALLY STRONG GIVEN THE TIME OF YEAR THAT WE’RE IN. AND OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY IN PARTICULAR, THAT JETSTREAM ACTUALLY INTENSIFIES ON TOP OF US, STILL NOT WINTERTIME, STRONG, BUT STRONG ENOUGH TO POTENTIALLY DELIVER A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AROUND HERE DURING THE DAY ON SATURDAY. AND THEN AGAIN ON SUNDAY TO A MARGINAL THREAT OF SOME SEVERE STORMS STARTING MIDDAY TOMORROW, ROLLING THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON. NOTICE HOW MUCH OF THE MAP YOU CAN SEE FOR A LARGE PART OF THE DAY. SATURDAY, THOUGH, IT’S NOT GOING TO RAIN ALL DAY LONG. THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE, THOUGH, THAT BY SATURDAY EVENING THUNDERSTORMS BECOME VERY WIDESPREAD AND SOME OF THESE COULD BE SEVERE. SO WE’RE GOING TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THAT SATURDAY EVENING. SIMILAR TIMING ON SUNDAY AFTER 1 P.M. TILL ABOUT 11 P.M., SOME STRONG THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED. ISOLATED STORMS MAY BE LEFT OVER ON MONDAY. IT’S SUNNY AND HOT ON TUESDAY, BUT LESS HUMID, HUMID 80S BACK WEDNESDAY WITH MORE SPOTTY SHOWERS AND STORMS. AND THAT WILL LAST ALL THE W

The rest of the week

Thunderstorms slow down a little early next week as a ridge (weather feature that usually brings hotter, drier weather) begins to build eastward over the South; however, it still does not look strong enough to suppress all thunderstorm activity.

The first part of the week looks drier than the last part. As storms move out Sunday night into Monday morning, a brief shot of drier air slides in from the north with a weak cool front. That lowers the humidity and removes virtually all showers and storms for Monday night and Tuesday.

Muggy air moves north again Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, so look for hot weather (highs in the mid-90s) and at least a chance of a few isolated, slow-moving, big-time downpours.
