Shelby County's largest polling place ready for voters
COUNTY OFFICES ACROSS ALABAMA. NOW, HERE IN SHELBY COUNTY, ELECTION OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE READY TO GO. WE’RE AT KINGWOOD CHURCH, JUST OFF OF HIGHWAY 31, IN ALABASTER. IT’S THE COUNTY’S NEWEST POLLING PLACE, AND IT’S ONE OF THE LARGEST ONES, TOO. THE PASTOR HERE AT THE CHURCH TELLING ME THEY’RE EXCITED TO HOST THE ELECTION, AND THEY’VE WORKED HARD TO MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE AS PAIN FREE AS POSSIBLE FOR VOTERS. VOTERS ARE GOING TO BE ENTERING THROUGH THE MAIN ENTRANCE. THE LINE IS GOING TO FORM THROUGH THE CHURCH TO GET PEOPLE INTO THE COMFORTABLE CONDITIONS INSIDE FOR WHAT WILL MOST LIKELY BE A PRETTY DECENT WAIT. THEY’RE EVEN STOCKED WITH BOTTLED WATER AND SNACKS FOR VOTERS. CHURCH LEADERS SAY THEY EXPECT AS MANY AS 10,000 VOTERS HERE TOMORROW. COUNTY ELECTION OFFICIALS SAY THAT’S ABOUT 70% VOTER TURNOUT. LOOKING BACK, HISTORICALLY IN SHELBY COUNTY, WE SEEM TO BE RIGHT AT THAT 6970 MARK. SO THAT’S WHAT I WOULD EXPECT FOR THIS. I WILL SAY IN SHELBY COUNTY, WE ALWAYS PLAN FOR 100%. THAT’S WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE. SO WE ARE STAFFED AND READY FOR 100% OF OUR VOTERS TO COME OUT. NOW, IF YOU WANT TO TRY TO BEAT THE RUSH, I UNDERSTAND THE BEST TIMES TO VOTE ARE BETWEEN NINE AND 11 IN THE MORNING AND TWO AND FOUR IN THE AFTERNOON. Church leaders say they're excited to host the election and they've worked hard to make the experience as painless as possible. Voters will enter through the main entrance. The line will form through the church to get people in comfortable conditions while they wait. They're even stocked with bottled water and snacks. Church leaders say they expect as many as 10,000 voters here. County election officials say that's about 70% voter turnout.Shelby County Probate Judge Allison Boyd said, “Looking back historically in Shelby County, we seem to be right at that 69-70% mark. So that's what I would expect for this. I will say in Shelby County, we always plan for 100%. That's what we would love to see. So, we are staffed and ready for 100% of our voters to come out.”If you want to beat the rush, good times to vote are between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. But no matter what time you come out, there will probably be some lines.
