Thousands without power as severe winter weather impacts Alabama

AND THESE ARE SOME OF SOME OF THE VISUALS ACROSS I-10 DOWN IN MOBILE. YOU DO SEE SOME VEHICLES STILL ON THE ROAD, BUT THERE ARE SOME ROADS THAT HAVE BEEN DEEMED IMPASSABLE DOWN TO THE SOUTH. AND SO JUST NOT A GOOD IDEA FOR TRAVEL TODAY. I MEAN, LOOK AT THIS. EVERYTHING’S BLANKETED IN WHITE. THE ROADS ARE SLICK AND THEY HAVE TURNED SLICK VERY FAST THIS MORNING. HERE’S WVTM 13 LIVE DOPPLER RADAR. AND THIS IS WHAT I WANTED TO SHOW YOU, THAT MOST OF THE SNOW IS DOWN TO THE SOUTH. AND WE DID HAVE SOME RADAR ECHOES EARLIER, BUT A LOT OF THAT IS NOT REACHING THE GROUND BECAUSE, AS TAYLOR SAID, WE HAVE A LAYER OF DRY AIR ABOVE US, AND THAT’S PREVENTING SOME OF THAT FROM REACHING THE GROUND. WE CALL IT SUBLIMATION. YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK OF IT AS IT EVAPORATING, BUT THE SNOW IS DOWN SOUTH, CLOSER TO MONTGOMERY. AND THEN FOR AREAS EVEN SOUTH OF THERE, SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 85, TAKING YOU DOWN TO MOBILE’S RADAR. AND YOU DO SEE THAT HEAVIER SNOW ALL THE WAY IN SOUTH MISSISSIPPI. AND THEN ALONG I-10. AND THAT RUNS, OF COURSE, THROUGH THE PANHANDLE OF FLORIDA. AND SO THAT’S WHAT I WAS SHOWING YOU WITH THOSE SNOW COVERED ROADS. NOT A GOOD SITUATION DOWN THERE AS FAR AS IMPACTS FOR US. VERY MINIMAL. I DO THINK THERE COULD STILL BE A FEW FLURRIES, A LIGHT DUSTING ALONG I-20, BUT THAT IS NOT THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO AND WE EXPECT MOST OF THE IMPACTS DOWN TO OUR SOUTH. THAT BEING SAID, WE’LL STILL BE ON GUARD THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AND EVEN THIS EVENING. AND THEN TAYLOR, WE DON’T WANT TO DISCOUNT HOW DANGEROUS THESE COLD TEMPERATURES ARE. THAT’S WHY WE’VE GOT IMPACT DAYS. THAT IS WHY WE HAVE IMPACT DAYS. BRYLEE ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA FOR TODAY, FOR TOMORROW. AS YOU MENTIONED, WE’RE EXPECTING THE POSSIBILITY OF SOME MINOR SNOW TOTALS, MAINLY SOUTH. THAT COULD MEAN A FEW SLICK SPOTS IN THE WINTER. WEATHER ADVISORY AREAS. BUT FOR MUCH OF CENTRAL ALABAMA, THE STORY IS JUST THE FACT THAT WE’RE STILL BELOW FREEZING. WE WENT BELOW FREEZING AT 4 P.M. ON SUNDAY. WE ARE STILL BELOW FREEZING ALL ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA AND IN THE BREEZE. IT FEELS MUCH COLDER THAN THAT. AND THESE ARE THE TYPES OF TEMPERATURES THAT ARE DANGEROUS. SO THIS IS A LOOK THROUGH THE REST OF THE DAY AT OUR FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES. WE FEEL LIKE THE TEENS AND LOW 20S AT 2 P.M. THIS AFTERNOON, OF COURSE, AS THE SUN GOES DOWN, THOSE TEMPERATURES START DROPPING OFF. AND THAT MEANS OUR FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES GET EVEN COLDER. 9 P.M. THIS EVENING, WE’RE STARTING TO SEE SOME SINGLE DIGITS, AND I BELIEVE MUCH OF CENTRAL AND NORTH ALABAMA WILL FEEL LIKE THE SINGLE DIGITS EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. ONEONTA FEELING LIKE FIVE DEGREES. WE FEEL LIKE SEVEN DEGREES IN BIRMINGHAM AND THEN INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. STILL MORE OF THE SAME, JUST DOWNRIGHT COLD WEATHER. HERE’S WHERE WE ARE FORECASTING LOWS TO BE. THIS IS WHAT THE THERMOMETER IS GOING TO SHOW EARLY TOMORROW. WE’VE GOT SINGLE DIGIT LOWS IN NORTH ALABAMA ACROSS OUR PART OF THE STATE. WE’RE GOING TO DIP INTO THE TEENS IN A LOT OF LOCATIONS. THIS IS THE KIND OF COLD THAT CAN BURST THOSE PIPES. SO MAKE SURE THIS EVENING YOU ARE DRIPPING YOUR FAUCETS. OPEN UP THE CABINETS UNDERNEATH YOUR SINKS TO ALLOW SOME OF THAT WARM AIR IN THERE TO HELP KEEP THOSE PIPES WARM AND MAKE SURE YOU’VE GOT ANY KIND OF EXPOSED PIPES COVERED, INSULATED. FINALLY, BY TOMORROW AFTERNOON, WE’RE GOING TO CLIMB ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK. SO AS I MENTIONED, IT’S BEEN SINCE 4 P.M. ON SUNDAY THAT WE FELL BELOW 32. WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABOVE 32 IN BIRMINGHAM TOMORROW AFTERNOON WE ARE FORECAST TO REACH NEAR 35 DEGREES. THERE’S GOING TO BE A SLOW WARMING TREND THROUGH THE REST OF THE WEEK. I SAY WARMING TREND. WE’RE STILL GOING TO FEEL COLD OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. TOMORROW, ANOTHER IMPACT DAY BECAUSE OF THAT COLD, ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNING HOURS. THEN AS WE APPROACH THE LATER PART OF THIS WEEK, WE START TO SEE OUR HIGHS REACHING INTO THE 40S AFTER MORNING, LOWS IN THE 20S AND GETTING INTO THE WEEKEND, WE WILL GET CLOSE TO 50 DEGREES WITH THE RETURN
