The Trump administration has ordered all federal diversity, equity and inclusion workers to be put on paid leave as they prepare to close those offices.

"This is a big deal. Merit. Our country is going to be based on merit again," President Donald Trump said as he signed the executive order Monday.

The directive will take effect by 5 p.m. local time Wednesday.

The Office of Personnel Management has instructed agencies to remove all related outward-facing media and work toward closing DEI offices.

"We will forge a society that is colorblind and merit-based," Trump said to a cheering crowd.

The American Federation of Government Employees, a union representing thousands of federal workers, criticized the move.

"Undoing these programs is just another way for President Trump to undermine the merit-based civil service and turn federal hiring and firing decisions into loyalty tests," the union stated.

The NAACP also condemned the decision.

"It's really disgusting to target federal workers who've been charged with the goal of expanding equity and ensuring that government services benefit a wide swath of the American people," said Patrice Willoughby, chief of policy and legislative affairs at the NAACP.

The executive order also eliminates federal equity plans and terminates roles dedicated to promoting diversity.

The NAACP has indicated that it is not ruling out legal action in response to the order.
