Victim identified in 'massive shootout' in Birmingham's Kingston neighborhood

VETERANS. TONIGHT, BIRMINGHAM POLICE IDENTIFYING A MAN KILLED IN A DEADLY SHOOTOUT. DEMARIUS CHERRY SHOT AND KILLED LAST NIGHT AROUND 945. THIS HAPPENED ON ROSCOE AVENUE. OUR WVTM13’S, ERIN LEWELLEN, IS LIVE FROM THE KINGSTON NEIGHBORHOOD TONIGHT. ERIN, DETECTIVES ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE SUSPECTS IN THIS SHOOTING. YEAH. BRITTANY GUY. YOU CAN STILL SEE SOME OF THE CRIME SCENE TAPE. CRIME SCENE TAPE FROM THE SHOOTING LAST NIGHT. NOW YOU CAN’T SEE IT FROM WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. BUT WHAT YOU CAN SEE IS THAT THERE ARE BIRMINGHAM POLICE OFFICERS WHO ARE HERE IN THE KINGSTON NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY JUST GOT HERE A FEW MINUTES AGO, AND THEY WERE OUT HERE EARLIER TODAY AS WELL, ALONG WITH THE ALABAMA LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY. AND THEY WERE QUESTIONING WITNESSES AND LOOKING INSIDE CARS TO TRY AND FIND ANYTHING THAT WOULD LEAD THEM TO WHOEVER PULLED THE TRIGGER LAST NIGHT. SO EARLIER TODAY, I DID TALK TO SOME PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HEARD THOSE SHOTS, BUT THEY DIDN’T WANT TO GO ON CAMERA. NOW, POLICE SAY THERE WERE 40 SHOTS FIRED FROM MULTIPLE GUNS, AND NEIGHBORS SAID THEY HAD TO HIT THE FLOOR TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY DIDN’T GET HIT DURING THE SHOOTOUT. AGAIN, ONE MAN WAS FOUND IN THE GRASS AND DIED AT THE SCENE. NOW, RESIDENTS SAY THAT THEY’RE TIRED OF GUN VIOLENCE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY FEEL LIKE PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE THE COMMUNITY ARE COMING TO SETTLE DISAGREEMENTS, AND INNOCENT PEOPLE END UP BEING HURT OR KILLED, LIKE CHRISTIAN SAVAGE. SAVAGE WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD IN 2022 WHILE PLAYING VIDEO GAMES IN THE SAME HOUSING COMMUNITY. KINGSTON IS A VERY SOFT SPOT IN OUR HEARTS BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE CHRISTIAN WAS SHOT. I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT CHRISTIAN WHEN I THINK OF CASES IN KINGSTON. I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT HOW BEAUTIFUL OF A KID HE IS AND WHAT HE HAS TO ENDURE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE BECAUSE OF INDIVIDUALS LIKE TONIGHT. OFFICER TRUMAN FITZGERALD SAYS THAT THAT IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO GET THOSE SHOOTERS OFF THE STREET. THEY SAY THAT WHEN THEY GOT HERE LAST NIGHT TO THE SCENE OF THE SHOOTING, THAT THERE WAS A CROWD OF PEOPLE WHO WERE OUT HERE, AND SO THEY FEEL LIKE SOMEONE KNOWS SOMETHING, BUT THEY RAN OFF BEFORE THEY WERE ABLE TO SPEAK TO ANYBODY. FOR NOW, WE’RE LIVE HER
