I’M GUY ROLLINS AND I’M BRITTANY DECKER. A SMALL EARTHQUAKE IN WALKER COUNTY IS GETTING BIG ATTENTION TODAY. THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 10:00 LAST NIGHT AND REGISTERED AT A 2.4. WVTM13’S LISA CRANE LIVE IN WALKER COUNTY TONIGHT. TONIGHT? LISA, ANY REPORTS OF DAMAGE? NO, NOT AT ALL. YOU KNOW, THE EPICENTER OF THIS SMALL TREMOR WAS ACTUALLY ABOUT A HALF MILE BEHIND ME INTO THESE WOODS BACK HERE. SO NO INJURIES REPORTED. NO DAMAGE REPORTED. BUT WHAT MAKES THIS ONE SO INTERESTING IS THE FACT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE FELT IT. NEIL HILLER DOES CUSTOM LASER ENGRAVING IN HIS GARAGE, BUT MONDAY NIGHT HE WAS GETTING INTO BED WHEN SOMETHING GOT HIS ATTENTION. I HEARD A BOOM. OKAY. AND JUST FELT THE HOUSE SHAKE A LITTLE BIT. AND I THOUGHT ONE OF MY LASERS BLEW UP. AFTER HE CHECKED ON HIS LASERS, HE CAME UP WITH SOME OTHER POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS. MAYBE A CAR HIT THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE OR SOMETHING. SO I GOT UP AND LOOKED AND DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING. AND I JUST THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS A, I DON’T KNOW, A BIG TRUCK GOING BY OR SOMETHING. I DIDN’T KNOW. ABOUT 15 MILES AWAY IN BAGLEY, KIM JAMES WAS HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH HER DAUGHTER WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I FEEL I HEAR SOMETHING FIRST AND IT SOUNDED LIKE A RUMBLE AND THEN BEGAN TO FEEL LIKE A SHAKE OF THE HOUSE. AND SO SHE AND I LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND SAID, HEY, WHAT WAS THAT? JAMES BELIEVES SO MANY PEOPLE FELT THIS SMALL TREMOR BECAUSE OF THE TIME IT HAPPENED LATE ENOUGH. THAT MOST HOMES HAD QUIETED DOWN, BUT MOST PEOPLE WERE STILL AWAKE. I THINK IF WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN AFTERNOON AND WE WERE BUSY, THE TELEVISION WAS ON, YOU KNOW, JUST THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE AFTERNOON. WE PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE EVEN RECOGNIZED IT. WITH NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES REPORTED, THIS IS JUST AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE. WALKER COUNTY RESIDENTS WON’T SOON FORGET. IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU EVER THOUGHT YOU’D FEEL. NEVER. I SEE IT IN THE MOVIES, BUT NEVER THOUGHT I’D. YEAH. EXPERIENCE IT. NOW, TYPICALLY WE DON’T ACTUALLY FEEL EARTHQUAKES THAT REGISTER UNDER ABOUT A 3.0. MOST PEOPLE I’VE SPOKEN WITH TODAY TO DON’T REALIZE HOW COMMON THEY ARE HERE IN ALABAMA. JUST IN THE PAST 20 YEARS, THERE HAVE BEEN 190 RECORDED EARTHQUAKE
Walker County residents describe feeling Monday night's earthquake
A small earthquake in Walker County is getting big attention Tuesday. It happened at about 10 p.m. Monday and only registered at 2.4, but people for miles around the epicenter felt the shaking. Neal Hiller does custom laser engraving in his garage. On Monday night, he was getting into bed when something got his attention. Hiller said, “I heard a boom, felt the house shake a little bit, and I thought one of my lasers blew up.” After he checked his lasers, he came up with some other possible explanations. He added, “Maybe a car hit the side of the house or something. So I got up, looked, didn't see anything, and I just thought maybe it was, I don't know, a big truck going by or something, I didn't know.”About 15 miles away in Bagley, Kim James was having a conversation with her daughter when she said, “All of a sudden, I hear something first. And it sounded like a rumble and then began to feel like a shake of the house. And so, she and I looked at each other and said, 'Hey, what was that?'”James believed so many people felt this small tremor because of the time it happened, late enough that most homes had quieted down, but most people were still awake. James added, “I think if we were in the middle of an afternoon and we were busy, the television was on, you know, just the hustle and bustle of the afternoon, we probably wouldn't have even recognized it.”With no damage or injuries reported, this was just an interesting experience Walker County residents won't soon forget. I asked Hiller if he ever thought he’d feel an earthquake. He said, “Never. I've seen it in the movies but never thought I'd experience it.” Typically, we don’t feel earthquakes that are under a magnitude of 3. Most people in Alabama don’t realize how common they are in the state. Over the past 20 years, there have been 190 recorded earthquakes in Alabama.
