THE IOWA DOT SAYS BOTH DRIVERS WERE ABLE TO WALK AWAY WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES. AND THAT IS INCREDIBLE. AND NOW THEY WANT THE VIDEO TO SERVE AS A REMINDER, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, KCCI. YOU GOT TO WATCH THIS AGAIN. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE DRIVER OF THIS STOP SEMI-TRUCK LOST CONTROL CROSSED THE MEDIAN AND WOUND UP FACING THE WRONG WAY INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. VIDEO FROM INSIDE THE OTHER TRUCK SHOWS THE DRIVER WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ROAD AND SLAMMED INTO THE STOP SEMI. YOU’RE GOING TO SEE IT RIGHT FROM HIS VANTAGE POINT RIGHT THERE. THE D.O.T. ISN’T SURE WHAT THE DRIVER WAS LOOKING AT. THAT PART OF THE CRASH IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. THE OTHER DRIVER WAS CITED FOR FAILING TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. NOW THE CRASH COMES AMID RENEWED FOCUS ON DISTRACTED DRIVING IN THE IOWA LEGISLATURE, A BILL THAT WOULD BAN THE USE OF ALL HANDHELD DEVICES WHILE DRIVING IS CURRENTLY AWAITING A VOTE IN THE IOWA HOUSE. APRIL IS ALSO DISTRACTED DRIVING AWARENESS MONTH. THE D.O.T. SAYS IT’S NOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE THAT BOTH DRIVERS SURVIVED THE CRASH. THEY HOPE THE VIDEO SERVES AS AN IMPORTAN

Dashcam video shows the moment two tractor-trailers collided head-on in Eastern Iowa last Monday. The Iowa Department of Transportation wants the video to serve as a reminder for drivers to keep their eyes on the road.Investigators told our sister station KCCI that the driver of a tractor-trailer lost control, crossed the median and wound up stopped and facing the wrong way into oncoming traffic on Interstate 80 near West Branch.Video from inside the other tractor-trailer shows the driver wasn't paying attention to the road and slammed into the stopped tractor-trailer. The Iowa DOT isn't sure what that driver was looking at. That part of the crash is still under investigation.The driver of the stopped tractor-trailer was cited for failing to maintain control.The Iowa DOT said both drivers walked away with only minor injuries.
