One person is dead after a small plane crashed Saturday afternoon in a wooded area in north Alabama.

The victim has been identified by the Marshall County Coroner’s Officer as 75-year-old John D. Lassiter of Crossvillle, according to media reports.

TV station WAFF in Huntsville reports that Lassiter was the only person aboard the single-engine Zenith 601XL.

The plane reportedly went down around 2 p.m. near Mt. Olive Drive in the Albertville area.

Mt. Olive Drive and Childmark Drive are both closed to all traffic other than first responders and residents who live in the area.

Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims told the Sand Mountain Reporter newspaper that it was too early to release additional details as of Saturday afternoon. Sims told the newspaper that numerous local emergency response agencies were on the scene, and that the Federal Aviation Administration had been notified and was en route to the scene.
