Impact Weather: more stormy weather ahead on Wednesday

FIRST, THIS IS WVTM 13 WEATHER. WELL, IT’S SUMMER STORM SEASON AND IT’S ALSO SHELF CLOUD SEASON. LOOK AT THIS FROM KEITH MCGEE. LOOKING OVERALL, 78, ALABAMA, FIVE BACK TOWARD THE ADAMSVILLE AREA. INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS TO THE NORTHWEST WERE DECAYING, BUT, BOY, THAT SHELF CLOUD WAS STILL SOMETHING. WHAT’S GOING ON HERE IS YOU GOT RAIN COOLED AIR SPREADING OUTWARD AWAY FROM THE DOWNDRAFT OR WHERE THE RAIN IS OCCURRING WITHIN THE THUNDERSTORM. AND OUT AHEAD OF IT. IT’S STILL VERY WARM AND VERY HUMID. SO THAT’S DISPLACING AIR UPWARD LIKE THIS. AND YOU GET THE SHELF CLOUD DEVELOPING IN BETWEEN THOSE TWO AIR MASSES AND WE GET REALLY CREATIVE WITH NAMES OF CLOUDS SOMETIMES AND SHELF JUST HAPPENS TO BE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. SO THAT’S WHAT IT GETS. THIS IS WHAT WE’RE LOOKING LIKE TONIGHT, THOUGH. SHOWER IS HERE TAPERING OFF AROUND TALLADEGA STILL RAINING PRETTY MODERATELY SOUTHEASTERN CLAY COUNTY INTO NORTHERN TALLAPOOSA COUNTY AND INTO RANDOLPH COUNTY. SOME LIGHT RAIN AROUND THE ANNISTON OXFORD AREA. HEAVIER THUNDERSTORMS UP HERE IN THE TENNESSEE VALLEY. WE’VE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF HAIL WITH THEM IN THE LAST COUPLE OF HOURS. THESE WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE IT DOWN TOWARD COLEMAN BLUNT ETOWAH, CHEROKEE COUNTY, DEKALB AND MARSHALL THROUGH ABOUT MIDNIGHT TO 2 A.M. I DON’T EXPECT ANY ACTIVE STORMS OVERNIGHT, BUT WE WILL STILL HAVE SOME OCCASIONAL LIGHTNING AND THUNDER TOMORROW. ANOTHER IMPACT DAY FOR US AROUND HERE BECAUSE OF A MINOR RISK OF SOME SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. TECHNICALLY, IT’S TERMED MARGINAL FROM THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER. THAT MEANS AN ISOLATED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM IS A POSSIBILITY. BUT SUMMER STORMS, WHETHER THEY’RE SEVERE OR NOT, CAN OFTEN BE SOME OF THE WORST WEATHER. YOU’LL DEAL WITH ALL YEAR LONG BECAUSE OF THE INCREDIBLE LIGHTNING, THE HEAVY RAIN, THE POTENTIAL OF SOME HAIL, AS WELL AS THOSE GUSTY WINDS THAT COULD GO OVER 40MPH. SO HOW IS THIS GOING TO WORK OUT FOR US? WE’VE GOT THE SHOWERS DROPPING SOUTHEAST TOWARD COLEMAN, SNEAD AND GADSDEN THROUGH 1 A.M. THOSE ARE NOT LIKELY TO MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO BIRMINGHAM, PELL CITY AND ANNISTON, BUT WE STILL COULD HAVE SOME SHOWERS THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD. THEN NEW THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOP DURING THE DAY TOMORROW AND SOME OF THESE COULD BE DOWNRIGHT NASTY, VERY TALL THUNDERSTORMS, VERY COLD CLOUD TOPS POTENTIALLY PRODUCING SOME HAIL AND STRONG DOWNDRAFTS AND GUSTY WINDS. THEY BECOME MORE CONCENTRATED DOWN TO THE SOUTH BY LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. AND THEN WE’LL DEAL WITH EVEN MORE SCATTERED SHOWERS COMING UP ON THURSDAY. SO TOTAL RAINFALL HERE. WE GET SPOTS EVEN IN BIRMINGHAM YET AGAIN WHERE WE COULD GO OVER 2 OR 3IN OF RAIN. AND IN OTHER SPOTS, NOT A DROP TO BE FOUND. SO AN IMPACT DAY TOMORROW, THE HIGH AROUND 80 ON WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY’S HIGH AT 78, FRIDAY’S HIGH AROUND 79, STILL IN THE 70S. ON SATURDAY, THE DRIER AIR FINALLY GETS HERE AND THINGS START TO FEEL A BIT NICE

Impact Weather: more stormy weather ahead on Wednesday

Expect more scattered heavy storms through Tuesday evening: some with torrential rainfall, intense lightning, and wind gusts over 50 mph. A weak cool front focuses more of the rain to the south on Wednesday. Check the video forecast for the latest.MORE IMPACT WEATHER ON WEDNESDAY Summer storms can be some of the worst weather you deal with all year. The most 'severe' storms are usually those of spring when we have a major risk of tornadoes or widespread, destructive wind; that season is winding down for Alabama, but now we have the almost daily downpours to contend with that bring heavy doses of things like intense lightning, torrential rainfall, wind gusts over 50 mph, and some small hail.⚠️ IMPACT WEATHER: WHAT TO EXPECT ⚠️Tuesday night: scattered heavy storms through 2 am mainly north of Birmingham. Partly to mostly cloudy, damp, and mild late. A few spotty showers possible through sunrise on Wednesday. Temperatures drop to the 60s. More Storms Wednesday: The weak front moving through North Alabama late Tuesday night stalls just north of Interstate 20 through Wednesday afternoon, and that focuses a lot of the stormy weather over the southern half of the state through Wednesday evening. Wednesday’s best chance of rain comes from near US 278 southward, and the greater concentration of storms shifts south of I-20 by late afternoon.A few localized spots will see more than two inches of rain through Wednesday afternoon. Some short-term flooding is possible. Not quite as hot: Wednesday morning starts out in the lower to middle 60s, and the clouds and showers should stifle the heat a bit for Wednesday afternoon: highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.LOOKING FOR A BREATH OF DRIER AIRThe stalled front Wednesday gets a little wavy on Thursday, and another – stronger – front moves in from the north. We will get another day of scattered showers Thursday despite the slightly drier air slowly feeding in from the east.Alabama stays on the border between the nicer, drier, more comfortable air coming in from the north and the sultry summerlike air in place to the south. The zone where air masses collide is usually ripe with thunderstorm activity this time of year, and we get another dose of the daily downpours on Friday and again on Saturday before we finally get a break with some bona fide cooler, drier air arriving Saturday night! The weekend may start with some showers early Saturday, but a stiff north breeze knocks the humid air to the coast and allows for more comfort in the air over North and Central Alabama through Saturday night and Sunday morning. Low temperatures drop as far as the mid-50s in the Birmingham area by Sunday, and we only rebound to the upper 70s with some sun and low humidity.Don’t get terribly used to the idea of comfortable weather, though. The humid air does make a comeback soon.CLICK TO SEE THE 7-DAY FORECAST—STAY WEATHER AWAREGet the free WVTM 13 app and turn on the alerts for the latest weather updates. For the latest Birmingham weather information and central Alabama's certified most accurate forecast, watch WVTM 13 News.Current Weather ConditionsHourly Forecast | 10-Day ForecastInteractive RadarBirmingham SkycamsLive Doppler RadarSign Up For Email Weather AlertsDownload the WVTM 13 AppDon't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
