Birmingham Fire and Rescue holding blood drive to support firefighter shot

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service will host a blood drive on Wednesday to support a firefighter shot at a fire station last week.

The drive will be held at 1808 Seventh Ave. North from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public. It is in partnership with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.

Firefighters Jamal Jones and Jordan Melton were doing routine morning maintenance in the Norwood area at Station 9 on 27th Street North when the shooting occurred.

Both firefighters were transported to UAB Hospital following the incident. Melton died from his injuries Monday evening while Jones remains in serious condition, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Police said the man who shot the firefighters had a personal conflict with one of them. No one is in custody.

The Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Personnel Relations Committee is asking for donations to support Jones' and Melton's families.
