McWane Science Center celebrating 25 years of education and curiosity
The facility opened in the 90s and has served hundreds of thousands of children since then
For 25 years, the McWane Science Center has been a place of curiosity and exploration in downtown Birmingham. Saturday, they celebrated with a video game theme: old, new, virtual, and retro — all about the programming and science behind them. The idea and concept of the educational facility came about in the 1990s."McWane is actually the product of a merger of two smaller museums that existed here in Birmingham," said Amy Templeton, president and CEO. "The Red Mountain Museum was a natural history museum and the Discovery Place was a children’s museum."The center started out on one floor but has since expanded to four. More than 350,000 students visit McWane every year.
