Police make arrest in murders of two women both found shot, burned in Birmingham

HE WAS ARRESTED LAST MONTH IN GEORGIA ON UNRELATED CHARGES. WVTM 13, GLADYS BATTISTA IS FOLLOWING THE STORY FOR US TONIGHT, AND SHE TALKED WITH THE MOTHER OF ONE OF THE VICTIMS WHO SAYS THIS IS WHAT SHE’S BEEN WAITING FOR. ANITA LACEY’S DAUGHTER, ARIEL JONES, IS BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF MINSKY’S VICTIMS. JONES BODY WAS FOUND SHOT AND BURNED. THIS PAST APRIL. LACEY TELLS ME SHE’S GLAD THAT HER FAMILY AND THE FAMILY OF MINSKY’S, OTHER ALLEGED VICTIM, ARE NOW ONE STEP CLOSER TO JUSTICE. NEARLY THREE MONTHS AFTER HER DAUGHTER, ARIEL JONES, WAS KILLED, A DAY LIKE FRIDAY HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING FOR ANITA LACEY. I GOT DISCOURAGED. WHAT I PRAYED EVEN HARDER. SO I KEPT THE FAITH. BIRMINGHAM POLICE CHIEF SCOTT THURMOND ANNOUNCING THE ARREST OF DEMARCUS MINCEY, THE MAN NOW ACCUSED OF KILLING JONES AND JAMARION FOWLER. OUR HEARTS GO OUT TO THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ARIEL JONES AND JAMIR FOWLER AS THEY DEAL WITH THE SENSELESS LOSS OF THESE TWO YOUNG WOMEN AND WE HOPE THIS BRINGS ARREST, BRING THIS ARREST, BRINGS ALL OF THEM ONE STEP CLOSER TO FINDING CLOSURE. LACEY SAYS SHE FEELS THAT AND ONE STEP CLOSER TO FINDING PEACE. I FEEL RELIEVED, YOU KNOW, THAT HE’S OFF THE STREETS WHERE HE CAN’T HURT NOBODY ELSE. THURMAN SAYS DETECTIVES FIRST CONNECTED MINCEY TO FOWLER’S MURDER AFTER SHE WAS FOUND SHOT TO DEATH AND BURNED ON JUNE 1ST IN THE ROEBUCK NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY SOON GOT A WARRANT FOR MURDER AND ABUSE OF A CORPSE. BUT IN THEIR INVESTIGATION, THURMAN SAYS DETECTIVES LINKED MINCEY TO JONES’S MURDER. TWO MONTHS BEFORE JONES WAS FOUND SHOT AND BURNED ON APRIL 18TH IN EAST LAKE. SHE WAS LOVING. SHE WAS UPBEAT. I MEAN, SHE WAS THE LIFE OF THE FAMILY. THURMAN SAYS HE DOESN’T CONSIDER MINCEY A SERIAL KILLER, AND THE ONLY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE VICTIMS IS THAT THEY ARE BOTH FEMALE. BUT LACEY SAYS SHE FEELS THE SAME PAIN OF LOSING HER OWN DAUGHTER TWICE OVER. AGREE FOR THE OTHER FAMILY, MY PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES GOES TO THE OTHER FAMILY AND WE GO GET THROUGH THIS. GETTING THROUGH FOR LACEY MEANT MOVING TO INDIANA BECAUSE SHE COULDN’T STAY IN BIRMINGHAM AFTER HER DAUGHTER WAS KILLED. NOW SHE SAYS SHE’S GETTING READY FOR WHAT IS TO COME. IT MADE ME SICK TO THE STOMACH. YOU KNOW, I’M TRYING TO PREPARE MYSELF NOW TO SEE HIM IN COURT. YOU KNOW, I WON’T REALLY HAVE THE PEACE I NEED UNTIL I SEE HIM AND HE SEE MY FACE. AND I’LL LET HIM KNOW WHAT HE TOOK FROM US. AND IN JONES’S DEATH, MINCEY IS CHARGED WITH CAPITAL MURDER. THURMAN SAYS HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE FOR MINCEY TO BE EXTRADITED BACK TO ALABAMA, CONSIDERING HE IS FACING UNRELATED CHARGES IN GEORGIA AT THE BIRMING

A man believed to be responsible for the murders of two women in Birmingham has been arrested. Birmingham Police Department Chief Scott Thurmond announced the arrest of 25-year-old Demarchies Mincey Friday morning. He's currently being held at the Dekalb County Jail there on unrelated charges he faces in Georgia but Thurmond says BPD investigators were able to connect him to the murders of 31-year-old Ariel Jones and 31-year-old Jermeria Fowler in April and June.Police found Fowler's burned body on June 1 off Sellers Road in the Roebuck neighborhood after she was reported missing the day before. An autopsy revealed she had been shot. Detectives determined Mincey to be a suspect in her death and they obtained a warrant for murder and abuse of a corpse. In their investigation, Thurmond says detectives were also able to identify Mincey as a suspect in the murder of Ariel Jones. Jones' body was found on April 18 on 5th Avenue North and police were able to determine she had been shot before her body was also burned. "That's the most troubling part that there's two young women that lost their lives in our city once again and these families are hurting and will always be hurting. This probably helps but this doesn't give them the full closure of bringing their loved one back."Jones' mother Anita Lacey said she moved out of Birmingham after her daughter was killed. Speaking to WVTM 13 from her home in Indiana, she explained what it was like setting eyes on the man who police believe killed her child. "It makes me sick to my stomach," Lacey said. "I'm trying to prepare myself now to see him in court.
