Rewinding Southern Miss 7, Auburn 2 in NCAA Regional

Auburn’s has exited the Road to Omaha after just two games. The top-seeded Tigers were eliminated from the Auburn Regional at Plainsman Park on Saturday, falling 7-2 to No. 2 seed Southern Miss.

Auburn will not return to the College World Series for a second straight year after allowing four home runs to the Golden Eagles. The Tigers, who finish 34-23-1, did not have an extra-base hit in either game this weekend.

Southern Miss 7, Auburn 2 Bottom 9th

Peirce singles with one out, then Irish walks with two outs. Foster pops up to third for the final out and that’s the ball game. Southern Miss wins 7-2. Auburn is eliminated from the Auburn Regional after just two games.

Southern Miss will face the winner of the late game between Samford and Penn on Sunday.

Auburn keeps the game within five runs with a scoreless ninth.

Auburn fails to score. The Tigers are down to their final three outs.

Lynch laces a ball deep for a home run.

Auburn 2 Southern Miss 6 Bottom 7th

Wortham started the seventh with a ground out. LaRue belted a one-out single. Peirce struck out for the second out. Irish slashed a single, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Ware was up with an opportunity to bring the Tigers within one run with a single swing. Ware struck out swinging to end the inning with the Tigers trailing 6-2.

Auburn 2 Southern Miss 6 Top 7th

Dickerson, Wilks, and Sargent went down in order, with each striking out. Auburn reliever Chase Isbell recorded the three strikeouts in the seventh.

Auburn 2 Southern Miss 6 Bottom 6th

Peirce and Irish start the inning with consecutive flyouts. Ware keeps the inning alive with a walk. Foster moved Ware to third with a base hit. Auburn gets on the board with a Stanfield RBI single, driving in Ware.

McMurray drives in Foster to bring the Tigers within four. The inning ended with Kason Howell hitting a ground ball that Dustin Dickerson had to dive for at shortstop.

Lynch gets a single with one out. Monistere moves Lynch to second with a base hit. Paetow’s single up the middle loads the bases. Montenegro plates Lynch with a sacrifice fly. Etzel hit a fly ball that pushed Peirce to the edge of the rightfield for the third out.

Auburn 0 Southern Miss 5 Bottom 5th

Howell, Wortham, and LaRue went down in order with a combined four pitches by Oldham.

Wilks knocks a ball way over the fence in right field for the third Southern Miss home run of the game. The one-out blast also pushes Vail off the mound. Vail leaves the outing after 4 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs, four earned on four hits, two walks, and three home runs. The three home runs match the amount Vail allowed during the entire season entering the NCAA Regional elimination game.

Auburn 0 Southern Miss 4 Bottom 4th

Bryson Ware started the inning by flying out to center field. Ware hit the ball hard, but it was right at Etzel. Cole Foster got a one-out single for the Tigers’ second hit of the ballgame. Stanfield and McMurray failed to advance Foster. Stanfield flew out to center, and McMurray ended the inning with a pop-up.

Auburn 0 Southern Miss 4 Top 4th

Lynch draws a leadoff walk. Monistere failed to advance Lynch with a fly-out. Lynch got nailed down at second base on a Paetow ground ball. USM challenged the play to no avail. The inning ended when Montenegro hit a ground ball to third.

Nate LaRue led the inning with a strikeout. Bobby Peirce grounded out to second and Irish to short to send the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the fourth.

Dustin Dickerson pads the Auburn lead with a deep drive over the right field wall with no outs. Vail entered the game only allowing three home runs in 65 innings. He’s allowed two against Southern Miss. Vail settled and retired Wilks and Sargent with grounders. Parker struck out to end the third.

Cooper McMurray led off the inning with a hard-hit line ball out to left. Kason Howell hit a flyout to right. Auburn went down 1-2-3 in the second when Brody Wortham hit a popup for the third out.

Nick Monistere strikes out to start the frame. Carson Paetow hit a grounder to third base for the second out. Rodrigo Montenegro added intrigue with a two-out base hit. Etzel ended the inning with a groundout.

Auburn 0 Southern Miss 3 Bottom 1st

Bobby Peirce flew out to left. Ike Irish grounds out for the second out in the first. Bryson Ware keeps the inning alive with a two-out single. A wild pitch by Oldham sends Ware to second with two outs. Foster walks, and Ware goes to third with two outs. Chris Stanfield hit a laser, but it was directly to Southern Miss left-fielder Tate Parker for the third out.

Auburn 0 Southern Miss 3 Top 1st

Southern Miss centerfielder Matthew Etzel gets on base to lead off the inning because of a fielding error by Auburn first baseman Cooper McMurray. Dustin Dickerson strikes out, leaving Etzel on first with one out. Etzel moves to second when Slade Wilks drew a walk. Etzel and Wilks get to jog home on Christopher Sargent’s three-run home run that sailed over the leftfield wall.

Vail kept the inning from getting worse by retiring Take Parker with a strikeout and Danny Lynch with a flyout to centerfield.
