IT’S A MOVIE EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER. WALK INTO THE SIDEWALK FILM CENTER AND CINEMA LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT OF THE BUILDING AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE AT A HOLLYWOOD PREMIERE. THE FREE SCREENINGS COME JUST A MONTH BEFORE THE 25TH SIDEWALK FILM FESTIVAL IN BIRMINGHAM, DURING A TIME WHEN FILM PRODUCTION HAS BEEN ACTIVE ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA, ESPECIALLY AT A HIGH POINT RIGHT BEFORE COVID HAPPENED, WE HAD A TON OF TOP TIER FILMS COMING. IT WAS REALLY BOOMING HERE. AND THEN OF COURSE, COVID SHUT THINGS DOWN A LITTLE BIT. AND LIKE MOST PLACES, IT’S COMING BACK SLOWLY. BUT I FEEL LIKE THIS YEAR IT’S REALLY STARTING TO PICK BACK UP. AND THE ACTUAL MOVIE PRODUCTION BRINGS A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT FOR PEOPLE IN OUR AREA. I THINK IT’S PRETTY AWESOME. I ALSO TEACH HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR, SO A LOT OF MY KIDS ARE ALSO INTO THEATER AND THEY GET TO DO EXTRAS AND ALL THE MOVIES THAT COME TO TOWN AND FILM HERE PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUTURE G
Sidewalk Cinema offers free screenings of 'Barbie', 'Jaws'
Walk into the Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema, located in the basement of The Pizitz, and you feel like you're at a Hollywood premiere. Free tickets and popcorn are available this weekend, thanks to a partnership with Pluto TV. "Well, I love Sidewalk and they do stuff like this all the time for fun movies," cinema regular Courtney LeSueur says. "So, it's really pink, which is nice!"This weekend's free screenings at Sidewalk Cinema offer something for everyone. On Saturday, one theater screened "Jaws" and another screened "Barbie." "We actually reserved our 'Jaws' tickets way earlier than our 'Barbie' tickets," moviegoer Melissa Talley says. "So, we kind of got to see 'Barbie' out of luck."The free screenings come just a month before the 25th annual Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham. Also, during a time when film production has been active across Central Alabama. "Especially at a high point right before COVID happened," Jennifer Freehling with Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema explains. "Had a ton of top-tier films coming. It was really booming here and then of course, COVID shut things down. But, in like most places, it's coming back slowly. But I feel like this year, it's really starting to pick back up."Actual movie production brings a whole different level of excitement for people in the area. "I think it's pretty awesome," Talley adds. "I also teach high school choir, so a lot of my kids are also into theater. And they get to do extras in all the movies that come to town and film here."The ongoing film production offers countless opportunities for future generations in Central Alabama.
