Smoke clearing, heat and humidity rising, storms threatening on Tuesday
OFF. THAT’S AN ICE, SOMETHING KIND OF DAY FOR SURE. IT’S BEEN HOT. THE HUMIDITY’S HIGH ENOUGH TO MAKE THE HEAT INDEX UP IN THE MID 90S, BUT THE HAZE HAS ACTUALLY KEPT THE TEMPERATURE DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT. AND IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHY THE SUN IN THE WESTERN SKY HAS THAT REDDISH TINT TO IT, IT’S THE WILDFIRE SMOKE FROM UP IN CANADA THAT HAS SUPPRESSED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY TODAY AS IT MOVES OUT TOMORROW, THOUGH, THERE WILL BE A BETTER CHANCE THAT ACTION, LIKE WHAT YOU SEE RIGHT HERE OVER MISSOURI AND ARKANSAS, MANAGES TO GET AS FAR SOUTH AS NORTH ALABAMA. SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE BY TOMORROW AFTERNOON. IT’S THE UPPER AIR WINDS THAT BROUGHT THE SMOKE IN. AND NOW THAT THOSE ARE BEGINNING TO SHIFT ON US, THE SMOKY SKY STAYS OVER GEORGIA, THE CAROLINAS IN FLORIDA. SO FOLKS WHO ARE DOWN AT THE GULF COAST GET ANOTHER DAY OF THE SMOKINESS. BUT FROM BIRMINGHAM, NORTH UP TOWARD DECATUR, COLEMAN, HUNTSVILLE, THE SHOALS AND FAYETTE HAMILTON, WE GET SOME BLUE SKY AT TIMES TOMORROW. IT’LL JUST BE A PROGRESSION FROM STARTING OUT. VERY GRAY AND SMOKY LOOKING TO GET THAT BLUE SKY BACK LATER IN THE DAY. BUT WITH THE LOSS OF THE SMOKE COMES THE GREATER CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT. TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND TOMORROW EVENING, SOME OF THOSE STORMS COULD BE PRETTY HEAVY AS THEY COME OUT OF TENNESSEE INTO NORTH ALABAMA THROUGH MADISON, LIMESTONE, LAUDERDALE, COLBERT, FRANKLIN, MORGAN COUNTIES, MAYBE EVEN CULLMAN COUNTY, MARION COUNTY AND WINSTON COUNTY AS EARLY AS 5 OR 6:00 TOMORROW EVENING. BUT AS THEY COME SOUTH, I DON’T THINK THEY’RE GOING TO HOLD TOGETHER IN A BIG LINE. SO SOME ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS STILL COULD DEVELOP AS FAR SOUTH AS TUSCALOOSA BIRMINGHAM, TALLADEGA, ANNISTON AND GADSDEN. THERE’S JUST NOT LIKELY TO BE ALL THAT MANY OF US THAT GET RAIN. SO YES, YOU COULD GET SOME. I JUST DON’T THINK MOST OF US WILL GET SIGNIFICANT RAIN TOMORROW. BOY, IT’S MUGGY TONIGHT. TEMPERATURES ONLY DROPPING INTO THE UPPER 70S BEFORE MIDNIGHT, 74 AT SUNRISE TOMORROW MORNING WITH SUNSHINE AND HAZE. AND THEN WE GET UP INTO THE MID 90S TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND YEAH, THE HEAT INDEX IS GOING TO BE A PRETTY BIG DEAL TOMORROW FELT LIKE ABOUT 95, 96 TODAY. TOMORROW WE GET TO 96 WITH A HEAT INDEX AT 102 IN BIRMINGHAM, 99 AT SPRINGVILLE, 98 AT ASHLAND, 105 IN TUSCALOOSA. STORMS COMING INTO NORTH ALABAMA AFTER 4 P.M., MOST LIKELY IN THE DARK GREEN. BUT EVEN AROUND JEFFERSON AND SHELBY, TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, CALHOUN COUNTY, THERE MAY BE SOME SCATTERED STORMS THAT MAKE IT THIS FAR SOUTH. FAST FORWARD BEYOND THE REALLY HOT WEATHER HERE THURSDAY, WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY, FRIDAY, WE SEE A COOL FRONT THAT STARTS TO COME IN WITH A GOOD CHANCE OF SOME HEAVY DOWNPOURS, FREQUENT LIGHTNING. BY FRIDAY NIGHT, THAT FRONT IS SOUTH OF BIRMINGHAM. IT WILL HELP TO START DRY THINGS OUT EARLY SATURDAY MORNING, ALTHOUGH SOME STORMS COULD LINGER INTO THE FIRST PART OF THE DAY. SATURDAY AFTERNOON, SUNDAY AND MONDAY. LESS HUMID, BUT STILL H

Smoke clearing, heat and humidity rising, storms threatening on Tuesday
A smoky, hazy sky blocked out enough sunlight to keep temperatures in the low-90s Monday, but less smoke means hotter weather on Tuesday as well as a chance of some scattered thunderstorms. Check the video forecast for the latest.MORE SUN, MORE HEAT, FEW STORMSWildfire smoke traveled nearly 2,000 miles from western Canada to Alabama, and that hazy sky reduced the sun’s affect on Alabama’s temperatures Monday afternoon. Smoke thins out during the day Tuesday, and that means more heat. The thick humidity in place keeps it muggy tonight: lows in the lower 70s under a fair sky. That same humidity makes Tuesday feel even hotter as the smoke clears and temperatures surge with more direct sunlight. Expect afternoon highs around 96°F and a heat index pushing over 100°F.A few storms explode over Southern Tennessee and North Alabama Tuesday afternoon. Most of the storms occur northwest of the Birmingham metropolitan area: a greater chance of at least 0.10” to 0.25” of rain around Cullman, Jasper, Hamilton, Fayette, Double Springs northward to The Shoals, Huntsville, Decatur and Athens. Timing on those storms looks to be from around 4 pm to 10 pm on Tuesday.HOTTER WEATHER THROUGH MIDWEEK Temperatures reach the middle to upper 90s on Tuesday with the heat index stretching near 100 to 105°F. Wednesday and Thursday are even hotter as temperatures climb closer to 100°F with a heat index exceeding 105°F in communities west of I-65.This may warrant a Heat Advisory; however, it's not quite as bad as the heat around the end of June and early July. BETTER CHANCES AT RAIN? As the "ridge" shifts to the west late week, a northwesterly flow aloft (jet stream) sends more stormy weather this way. Friday looks like the better day for scattered storms with a few showers into Saturday morning. Temperatures will also shift back to normal in the upper 80s/low 90s. Birmingham's normal high is 91 degrees in mid-July.
