WELL, IAN AND BRITTANY BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL HUNTER WILLIAMS SAYS THE TRAGIC DEATH OF FIREFIGHTER JORDAN MELTON IS A SAD REMINDER OF THE SACRIFICES. FIRST RESPONDERS MAKE. EACH AND EVERY DAY. NOW FIREFIGHTER MELTON DIED MONDAY EVENING, FIVE DAYS AFTER HE WAS SHOT AT FIRE STATION NINE. FELLOW FIREFIGHTER JAMAL JONES WAS ALSO SHOT WHILE THE TWO WERE DOING ROUTINE MORNING MAINTENANCE AT THE STATION ON 27TH PLACE, NORTH JONES IS STILL RECOVERING AT UAB NOW AND NEARLY A WEEK LATER THE FLAG IS AT HALF STAFF OUTSIDE OF STATION NINE. AND THERE ARE ALSO FLOWERS. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DROPPING OFF. YOU KNOW, TODAY WAS A VERY SOMBER MEETING AT THE BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL. AND I THINK THAT THERE IS NOTHING THAT ANYONE CAN INDIVIDUALLY SAY WHETHER THEY BE IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION OR WHETHER THEY BE A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY OR A MEMBER OF THE BIRMINGHAM FIRE AND RESCUE FAMILY. AND BIRMINGHAM POLICE SAY THE PERSON ACCUSED OF SHOOTING THE TWO FIREFIGHTERS APPEARS TO HAVE HAD A PERSONAL CONFLICT WITH ONE OF THEM SO FAR, NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE. Gov. Ivey offering rewards for information in the shooting of two Birmingham firefighters
The governor's office is offering new rewards for information regarding the shooting of two Birmingham firefighters.Firefighters Jordan Melton and Jamal Jones were doing routine morning maintenance in the Norwood area at Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service's Station 9 on 27th Street North on July 12 when the shooting occurred.While Jones continues to recover, Melton, who had recently graduated from the BFRS recruit academy, died from his injuries Monday evening.On Tuesday. Gov. Kay Ivey announced that two $5,000 rewards, one for each firefighter, are being offered for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting. This brings the reward total to $25,000, with Crime Stoppers offering $15,000 for information regarding the incident as well.“We mourn the loss of Birmingham firefighter Jordan Melton, who, along with fellow firefighter Jamal Jones, was deliberately shot while on duty at the Norwood Community fire station on the morning of July 12," Ivey said. "Firefighter Melton passed away from his injuries last evening and firefighter Jones continues to recover. I join with all Alabamians in offering prayers for the family and colleagues of firefighter Melton over their loss, and I pray for the full recovery of firefighter Jones. Furthermore, I am offering two $5,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this heinous crime against two of Birmingham’s dedicated first responders. We will not rest until justice is served.”In honor of Melton's sacrifice, Ivey also ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-staff once his funeral arrangements have been announced.The Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Personnel Relations Committee is asking for donations to support Jones' and Melton's families, which can be made here.
